Which ISP should I choose?

yea! its a sick offer

i know that afrihost got it for R29/PM

not a big $ difference, but i think in the long run it may be :D

I'm new to ADSL, as this is the first time that I use it.
For the past 4 years I've been using Vodacom's 3G, and the experience wasn't bad at all.
I wanted to use SAOL, but my dad run into some problems with them when he tried to cancel their services, to switch to Afrihost.
On his recommendation I've have decided to use Afrihost as my ISP and I have been very happy with their service, and as has been pointed out already, for capped services their prices are very good.

So far so good, it's just waiting on Telkom to upgrade my measley 384 line to 4mb.
If I'm lucky, this might be done right before I retire in about 35 years time.

I just signed up for screamer on Monday 25th Jan. Spoke to the call centre agent, explained I need to be connected asap to the internet. Representative told me it takes 2 days for your order to go through. I submit my application along with bank details and all my personal details.

So today is Wednesday and still no email (as promised via the call centre) to give me my password and access details. I call the technical support.

They tell me that Screamer is waiting for an upgrade from Telkom and that no new customers are being connected until this is sorted out. First mention of it. He tells me it will be sorted by Friday (I doubt it!). And the reason is that overdemand is meaning existing customers are not getting the speeds they are paying for.

Thats enough for me to say GOODBYE SCREAMER!

I ask to speak to a supervisor so I can cancel my subscription. Supervisor number 1 is engaged after holding, try supervisor number 2, hold, oh no they are also engaged, lets try number 3, oh damn they are also engaged. So they take my number and say they will call me back. Still waiting.

Nice work SCREAMER. Just shows you cheaper is not always better. I'm voting with my feet and going elsewhere.

Sounds like sour grapes. I have 2 Screamer connections for home and work and they are both Screaming.
So what if there is a waiting list to get a Screamer connection. Does this make it a bad service?!?!
You seem to ba a 2 post wonder and both of them were the same post on different threads so I guess the opposition is doing what it can do bad mouth Screamer.

If you dont want to wait then go somewhere else but dont call it a bad service cause its not.

Afrihost is the best bet for capped. That's been decided for a long time.

Thing about SAOL is you have to transfer your line to them, if that's a problem try DigiChilli:erm: or Screamer:erm:

...and if you want to transfer it back you will need a half bottle Vaseline, Telkom will nail you R600+ instalation fee

@soulshatter Binc does provide a very fast and unshaped service but I wish they had more options as not everyone can afford that amount of money. I hope they come out with more options soon.

what do you suggest for a low (very low) end user who only wants email, no interest in downloading (wouldnt know how) wants to google stuff of interest, would like to use facebook and add comments to blogs sometimes. Big thing to take into consideration - a pensioner without a pension. Tx :0

Hi. Im looking for a new ISP. Im coming off a WebAfrica complete package (384k, 5gb). I usually top up with 2 extra gb, but could use more. Im looking at spending R400-R500 including line rental at 384k (dont need faster). Any suggestions?

Also, I have 3 computers connected to my modem over wifi and 1 over cable using internet. Dont know if that matters.

Thanks guys

With luck our line should be converted to DSL by month end. I'm also looking for an ISP and Afrihost is looking like the deal atm so gonna give them a try.

I have DSL complete at the moment and want to cancel it then get the line separate, then choose my ISP.
Once I have cancelled will I have to pay the DSL activation fee for Telkom? The R490.00 or is that if no ADSL line was installed before?

Facebook chews a fair amount of bandwidth. You could use lite.facebook.com to decrease the bandwidth use a little. Wikipedia.org is great for stuff of interest as I'm sure you already know.

I have similar Internet use than you, I don't really download much and use Internet primarily for surfing, research and email. If you already have a Telkom landline, find out if it is ADSL enabled. An ADSL service costs you an additional ~R150 per month. You can make calls and use internet at the same time. Then, all you need is an ISP. I am switching to ADSL now but it seems that Afrihost has the best deal. You can go pay-as-you-go style at R29 per gig or get a package and then top-up as you need it. Alternantively, if you want to spend your silver years online 24/7 Screamer has an uncapped version for R400 per month.

I have not personally used these services so I am giving you information based purely on price. My dad uses Vodacom 3G and he is very happy with the service, though that would be a bit more expensive at first (modem is more expensive). He's had excellent product support so far, both on the phone and at Vodacom shops.

If you have any queries send me a PM sometime.

MWEB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow. signed up for 4mb uncapped residential @539/month. so far: EXCELLENT!!!! 2.6mb/.27 down/up to/from UK and US!! decent latency (100ms local, 300ms international). prorated the first month. my vpns work fine, apparently not shaped. so far, so amazing. voip works (single channel).

Really happy with Afrihost and yes, Telkom at the moment. I can even connect with Linux without installing any additional software.

I'm waiting for Telkom to come and install my residential line, with the express purpose of then getting ADSL... so far so good. But now what? The market really seems to be heating up, so I'm more concerned about choosing a provider that will provide good service and a stable performance, than to find the outright cheapest provider.

I would use the connection for browsing/research, software updates, the odd music download (perhaps 2-3 albums per month) and maybemaybe some gaming, but probably not much. So I'm guessing that a 5Gb or uncapped service is necessary, and these are my options (I think): Mweb uncapped, Afrihost capped (4Mbs+5Gb) or Telkom Do3 (4Mbs+5Gb).

Afrihost works out to R558, Telkom to R554. Looking at the pricing, Mweb isn't really an option at R899. Telkom seems convenient, because then I only pay one bill, but what is their service like (really)? And I'm worried whether Afrihost is keeping up with demand, because I found a lot of complaints on the internet? But also many people seem to be very happy with them?

Any views?

Not Afrihost Uncapped though, because when it comes to that, they SUCK big time! After you reach 30GB on a 4mb/s uncapped, they shape AND throttle you so bad, you'll be begging for a dial-up connection. Downloaded an attachment from gmail yesterday... max 14KB/s.

Just posting here to voice my opinion about Cybersmart, they suck.

I will probably switch to Mweb or something soon.

Cybersmart has provided terrible service and a terrible connection for a very loyal customer. I am done with this.

I have two capped accounts with Afrihost, great speeds, great pricing, great service when needed never had a problem, can strongly suggest them.
