Which ISP should I choose?

Hey Mikroz

Is your line with WebAfrica as well? I will presume no and just suggest a bandwidth portion alternative.

Axxess.co.za would be my next choice (if you do not like Cybersmart or TelkomInternet).

Axxess 3GB - R179.00 - if you go with Axxess I would just recommend mailing support after you receive the account to say you would like to be on the SAIX network. Not IS Semi Shaped. Many users are having issues with IS Semi Shaped.

Cybermsart 3GB - R125.00 - that price may even come down further soon.

and obviously
TelkomInternet 3GB -20GB Local (after cap) - R149.00

Regarding the gaming:

Why do you say gaming is pointless on a 384k connection? Games ranging from World of Warcraft requiring 4kb per second up and down to more intense games like Battlefield comes to mind with ~15kb a second. That does not reach the line capacity of ~43kb a second.

Latency will therefore not really affect game-play that much unless you have multiple users on the single line playing.

I am unashamably biased towards Cybersmart. Been using them for over a year now and I'm impressed with just about every aspect of how they do business.

For this reason I will punt them at every opportunity on this and other forums. They just doing so much right, right now and they deserve every accolade....

Hey MrG and sandman,

Thanks for the input.

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure of the setup, but afaik Telkom supplies the line and WebAfrica the bandwidth.

I just piggyback (2 users on the line) on the connection (and do the tech' stuff) - it's the property of a relative.

I'd prefer to avoid Telkom as much as possible simply because they're Telkom are thieving b#%$ards imo. :D

I think any connection we get needs to support international bandwidth - I don't want to get called and b*tched at because "the 'site won't load". :D

I'll scope out Cybersmart, and will keep your tip handy.

I think we need to look at upping our bandwidth allowance to the next level...we're hitting 3 Gb mid-month way too often lately.

I don't game much anymore, and when I do it's usually along the lines of GTA or NFS, which are quite intensive on bandwidth afaik.

The Broadband Bundle Plus access service consists of the following features:

* 3Gig Cap + 50Gig Local Cap
* ADSL 384K Line Rental
* 5 Mailboxes
* 10MB Webhosting

month to month. Includes line rental.

www.saol.com

This is a pretty good offer I might addat just R 249.00 p/m.

Terms of this offer.....

* Monthly charges are R 249.00 p/m.
* This is on a month to month basis.
* N.B If you currently have a normal telephone line (this line rental is still payable to Telkom), we will need to upgrade your line to ADSL and transfer the ADSL portion of the line to Saol.com. This transfer process takes Telkom up to 21 days. On confirmation of transfer we can activate this service immediately. While we will endeavor to have your ADSL line transferred to Saol.com in this time frame, please note that this is reliant on Telkom's planning department. Should there be a delay or early delivery we will inform you accordingly
* If you already have ADSL (not with Saol.com), we will migrate your ADSL line to Saol.com. This migration process takes Telkom up to 10 days. On confirmation of migration we can activate this service immediately. While we will endeavor to have your ADSL line transferred to Saol.com in this time frame, please note that this is reliant on Telkom's planning department. Should there be a delay or early delivery we will inform you accordingly
* If you already have ADSL with Saol.com, we can activate this service immediately.
* The bandwidth of this package DOES NOT carry over to the following month.
* If you do not have a router, one can be supplied to you at a cost.

This is really a good offer. 50GB of local only for less than Telkom's all in one offer! :)

Am I missing anything here?

MrG, thanks for the great info. You cleared up all my uncertainties. Nice one!

Hey Ariella.net

Thanks, just a note... obviously the first post in this thread is rather outdated and do not include the R29 per gig offering etc that Afrihost has at the moment.

Reading the latest posts contributed by the members will give you a clearer indication :)

Once again, I really should get around to spending a bit of time updating that first post.

What have you decided to purchase with regards to ADSL?

+1. Their new packages coupled with nightrider is pure win! :) The afrihost product(@ R29/GB) is also currently very good but the special is ending soon AFAIK.

That site is pretty out of date. Doesn't seem to include any of the recent uncapped offerings (and I can't see a way to search only uncapped accounts).

The uncapped offerings are fairly recent. I've been doing a bit of research over the past month. Some uncapped ADSL offerings include SAOL, Digichilli and Screamer. Both SAOL and Digichilli come recommended on this forum, whereas people seem to experience some problems with Screamer. Check the links for more information.

I'm currently keen on SAOL because their fee includes ADSL rental and it's a once off, no frills, no fancy schmancy throttled nonsense. You might save a bit on Digichilli, but then you'd have 2 bills.

If you want a couple of GBs for browsing, email, gaming and small downloads I would say go with Afrihost. If you would like to go uncapped, go with SAOL.

Afrihost is the best bet for capped. That's been decided for a long time.

Thing about SAOL is you have to transfer your line to them, if that's a problem try DigiChilli:erm: or Screamer:erm:

Beware

Im not so sure if digiChilli is a good bet ,if even advise, looking more closely at their facebook page , almost everyone rated them 1/10 with the exception of the one that rated 1.5/10

Talking about dl speeds of 1kb/s

:whistle:

I dont see SAOL in the above pdf, making it a bit useless because the rumors are that they might be the best.Ive been sending emails to them and they have a good service.

Gents, thought I would paste in here for those of you who are interested.

Here is a special on behalf of PLuGG (Internet Solutions) towards their sponsored team (Bravado) towards the community!

Bravado Gaming, on behalf of their sponsor, PLuGG (a Division of Internet Solutions), are running a special on their ADSL accounts. These accounts come at the special low price of R22/GB, one of the cheapest prices for international internet bandwidth in South Africa!

This special is valid forever and is a month-to-month contract, meaning you can cancel the subscription at any time and is available for all PluGG packages: 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30GB which can be topped up at any time for R22/GB. However, only the first 100 subscribers will be eligible for this special, so don’t miss out. Additionally, when your account runs out you will receive the same amount of data in local bandwidth. So for example if you buy a 5GB account and it gets capped, you will then get 5GB worth of local bandwidth.

All you have to do is e-mail [email protected] and include which package you would like, your name and alias. Soon after you will be sent an e-mail from PLuGG/Internet Solutions with a voucher and instructions on how to redeem it. (All instructions are included in the email) You can redeem it at any time and you will only be billed (via debit order only) once you have redeemed the voucher. A reminder that this offer only lasts for this week.

Any questions can be forwarded to the email specified. We are doing this for you, the community.

Please note: The special is not listed on the IS or PLuGG website, (www.plugg.co.za) as it is a once of special to the gaming community through Bravado.

Thanking you!
Bravado

Sounds good. Maybe start a thread on it. I however do not feel like canceling my Afrihost. They've been good to me but I'm sure others will be interested!
