Which ISP should I choose?

I'm currently looking for a new ISP that doesn't have restrictions like Afrihost..

I'm on the 4mb line and would like to keep it that way, But I would prefer to keep it below the R500 range so sadly I can't go with Mweb..

So far I've seen, TRLtech, Axxess Uncapped, and some others..

Any Suggestions on what to pick?

We signed up for accounts with most of the "uncapped" providers, to test the uncapped accounts, Screamers is just not on they are the worst, timeouts, packet loss, slow speeds, Afrihost accounts work, but you do not get full speed on downloads maybe half of the specified speed sustained, axxess and IS accounts are the same, they do work, but as per IS accounts not acceptable for my use, Mweb we used their accounts are by far the best out of the bunch, some small hiccups where their ipc was down, etc, some high latencies at times, and Mweb aint my bedt friend from past experiences with them:cry:, HostworX we have used their 4mb account for the last 2 weeks and so far the best of the crowd, we seen 2 times during this period a slight slowdown, but I think this was at the same time that IS was experiencing downtime , we at this point in time can only say give Mweb or HostworX a try as they are by far the best of all of the rest.

Ps. ask HostworX for a discount they will match mwebs pricing ;) http://www.HostworX.co.za

Whatever you do, avoid the guys at Afrihost. Their entire team are a bunch of monkeys that care only about messing you around.

Beware of Afrihost.

They lie to you, they cheat you out of money and then when you call to try sort anything out, they are helpless.

The blame IS for port throtteling which we found out was a lie, they constantly promise to get back to us which they never do and the general attitude of the staff is to deliver the usual scripted responses without ever addressing your actual need.

Needless to say, we will never use Afrihost again and warn people to stay away from them if you run a business and need internet bandwidth. They are useless.

Whatever complaint comment one might have regarding any ISP, I don't think that the type of language PetrolHead has used in the above post should be tolerated or used in this form.

Thank you Max001. My sincere apologies to all my broadband forum members, after reading what I wrote, I felt ashamed and juvenile. I have cleaned it up.

That being said, Afrihost have really let us down and they don't seem to care about it.

Thanks again Max001.

I couldn't agree with you more PetrolHead! After being extremely disappointed (and driven half mad) by Afrihost's "Uncapped" offering, I opted to move back to their 50GB "Power Plan". Before "Uncapped" arrived on the scene, I was quite happy with the performance of this plan. But now I am frustrated to tears. Everything is slow, peak and off-peak. Torrents seam to be capped at 50kb/s and even simple http downloads do not run at full speed (not even half). I've emailed them a few times, but the replies only server to infuriate me more! Uhhhm, yes, I think I know that download speed on torrents are determined by the number of seeders etc. I do a simple test to proof that it's Afrihost... by using another account. I think this is my last month with Afrihost. They've really messed up.

PS: I pay quite a premium for 4mb/s and I expect my ISP to deliver at those speeds! You're forgiven for the brief lapse in self-control PetrolHead!

Eish! We insisted (with AH) on the phone that they provide us 15gb capped with immediate effect. After 2 hours and three phone calls we got it right, Now our hamachi is working again. Phew!

As our ability to service our customers at low cost is now restored by the capped account, I feel satiated. I still have a bone to pick with Gian (who today, has no idea that we exist as users of his service) and the team at AH about the way they handled our query.

AH is capped/unshaped and uncapped/shaped in 2010 on planet internet SA.

I bet my mud hut is better than yours! no wait...who cares about this **** anyway!

3 Way Toss Up?

Hi.

I have just got my phone line installed and am now trying to choose between these three services, they all offer something really useful.

I am under the impression that all of these deals are Inclusive of (Data + ADSL Line), please correct me if I am wrong? and which do you guys think is the better service to choose from.

WebAfrica: DSL Complete 5:
Pros:
  • Line speed of 4Mbps - 10Mbps:erm:
  • 4 Current Connections
  • 3 Months at only R299
  • Have used them for 2 years for domains and have only good memories
  • R15/GB (not too bad)
Cons:
  • Only 10GB Cap
  • Shaped

MWEB: Big Time Broadband:
Pros:
  • Uncapped
  • DSTV on demand
  • Minor past experience (yet all good)
Cons:
  • Shaped
  • Line speed 512Kbps:cry:

OpenWeb: Uncapped Standard:
Pros:
  • Line speed 4Mbps
  • Only R539
Cons:
  • Heavy shaping
  • Absolutely no past experience with them

PS: If you think there is a better deal please give info!
Thanks

Hi ShadowRider,

I just moved over to Webafrica, opting for their "Titan 3 Complete" special and am extremely happy with the product and their service.

I am getting consistent speeds of 3.5Mbps at all times of day.

There are still some options available at http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/titan_dsl_special, but some of the cheaper options are sold out I see.

You might find something here that will suit you, there is no direct link to these specials from their website for some reason.

Be careful of OPENWEB!!!

Recently, we had a bit of trouble with Openweb. Our 4MB uncapped line was performing very badly!!! 30kb/s at 10 o’clock at night.... So we mailed them to ask what is going on and got the following sarcastic, snotty response:

Hello,

I can sing a song for you? Or I can get some stats from you which will perhaps assist me in finding the problem?

Ohhh, a wild guess, but perhaps a Username would be a good start?

If you provided me with the relevant details in your first mail, I am sure your problem would've been sorted by now.

Perhaps look to yourself before blaming others?

I have tested your account and it is working great.

What seems to be the problem?

AS FROM THE END OF THE MONTH YOU CAN DELETE MY ACCOUNT. I WILL POST ALL THESE EMAILS WITH YOUR ATTITUDE ON ALL THE FORUMS I AM PART OF. YOU GIVE OPENWEB A BAD NAME.

Please be careful of Openweb, their customer service is terrible!!!! They take long to answer mails and then you get a sarcastic response?! Their customer service is almost as horrible as their ADSL speeds...
I WILL MAKE SURE OF IT THAT NOBODY I KNOW WILL USE YOU EVER AGAIN

That's quite appalling, but quite common in this country of ours.

It is disgusting - OpenWeb should respond to this with an explanation. If I treated customers like that I will be looking for a new job!

:wtf: I was thinking of going to openweb, but if this is how they treat their customers then there is absolutely no way- that really is appalling- you should put this on hellkom and hello peter
