Which ISP should I choose?

So 1GB = R118.00 ?

Axxess has got a 1GB unshaped for R99.00(SAIX based account)

Plus as you know with UUNET/Verizon, the more users they get the slower it gets

Unshaped Axxess has been added to the original post of ISP's

GOAL ISP will be removed December 1st if nothing interesting has happened with them.

Hi,

I'd just like to recommend XDSL www.x-dsl.co.za whom I've been using for a little under a year.

Capped ADSL comes in at 63 plus VAT per gig and they're quite relaxed about increasing your allowance after your unplanned frag-fest.

Changes:

1) GTS has been removed from the ISP list.
2) Concurrent Connections has been added.
3) Updated Imagine-IPS prices, and added the Uncapped service to list

Edited:

4) Cybersmart confirmed 1 concurrent connection
5) Imaginet confirmed 4 concurrent connections on SAIX and 1 on the I.S accounts
6) Added, Getting ADSL Section

Please correct any inaccurate information with concurrent connections (or any other things), and also post if you can add missing information.

Mr.G

There have been many threads asking how to choose an ISP, or which is better, more value for money so this is why this is here. Giving mostly my opinion, along with actual prices valid at the time of the post.....

Dear MrG:

Here is my situation,

I recently arrrived to SA and am staying with firends for a few months while I find my place. Little surprise, capped ADSL. Big problem. I need ADSL fr teleconferencing and downloads and 3 gigs won't last me more than a week, if at all. Worse of all, I am not in my house yet. I contacted Telkom and they said we could get up to an additional 9 gigs and set it up in another computer. So I thougght his could help for now. Yet, as it now turns out, Telkom won't just add the darn 9 gigs to the account. Rather, they set up 3 new 3 gig accounts and say the only way to use them is once the first 3 are capped. But then we have to re-set the router and my firend has to re-set all hiss pop 3 emails on his 3 computers to get his e-mail.

Do you know if any of these providers would allow for a second user using the same telkom line? I would really prefer an unlimted account, or a high pay as you go with rollover. Can I get this while I am staying at my friends?

I guess the real question is can yu have tow different ISP services running concurrently on one Telkom linem if we each have a router and modem maybe?

Thanks!

Hey InternetAdvocate

The 3GB TelkomInternet accounts usually get you way more than 3GB firstly. Its a relaxed capping (soft cap) service. If you bought two of them, you would get around 15GB- 25GB, if you look at the way they have been capping in the last while. Only TelkomInternet has a soft cap other ISP's tend to hardcap you. (www.telkominternet.co.za)

If you would like to use a seperate ISP account to the rest of the people on your network you need to set your modem in bridged mode, this allows you to make your own private PPPoE connection from your computer to the internet, using the same modem as your friends, and all while using the the same ADSL line.

You need to refer to your modem manual to setup bridged mode (usually just an option you need to tick), then in Windows you go to Network Places, Add Network connection, Internet -> Broadband Modem. It will ask you for the username and password and make a normal dialup style account which you just connect when you want to be online (or just set it autodial for the same always on connectivity).

Dear Mr.G:

Thanks so much! Can I have an uncapped account using bridgemode, even though their account is a Telkom 3g? the reason I am asking is because I e-mailed OpenWeb with this question and this was their response:

"Hi there!

You could purchase an uncapped account, however you would not be able to run both accounts on the same line.
As your OpenWeb account would be uncapped, I'm sure they wouldn't have any problem using it instead of the Telkom 3GB account.
You do not need any special router to run our uncapped accounts.

Let me know if you need any other help!

Regards,
Ben Greenwood
OpenWeb"

So, is the problem that the account cannot be uncapped because for that the line has to be uncapped? If so, would my use of my ISP gigs through the same line in bridge mode consume any of my friend's bandwidth?
We recently contacted Telkom and my friend bought on my behalf 2 more 3 gigs. We thought they would just add 6 gigs to the account. However, they gave us two new accounts, each with 2 e-mail addresses. They explained that the only way to access those 3 gigs is to wait until the first 3 gigs are exhausted and you are disconnected. Then you must set up your router, modem and pop 3 e-mail accounts on all computers for account number two. And once you exhaust these 3 gigs, do the same thing all over again.

My friend has about 3 or 4 computers and is unwilling to have to, first, have his account disconnected as he works from home a lot and does not want to see this happen in the middle of something important. But, most of all, is unwilling to re-set modems, routers, and multiple e-mail accounts on all these computers everytime the gigs are exhaused. So I am back to square one again. Do you know a way around this?

Okay....

1) OpenWeb says you cannot have two accounts on one line, this is not entirely accurate. They are probably saying, well if you using a uncapped account why would your friend want to use his/her own account, because you can just share the uncapped with them. (let the router logon with OpenWeb and share the connection) -< thats what OpenWeb is saying

2) If you put your username/password into the modem/router only one connection can be made, Telkom and OpenWeb is correct with that. The only way to use 2 or more accounts at once is with 2 or more computers and having your modem set in bridged mode, not self authenticating PPPoE.

I currently have 3 accounts running on one line at the same time personally. WebAfrica, WebAfrica and TelkomInternet. Each computer logs onto its own unique account.

3) TelkomInternet sell 2GB and 3GB accoutns as they said. These accounts are not hardcapped, only once you notice you cannot logon with a account anymore you will need to use the next set of username/password you purchased.

It should hardly affect e-mail in anyway, if its TelkomInternet e-mail I think you need to be on the actual account to receive that mail.

Therefore:

Put your modem into bridged mode.
e.g Billion modems
http://192.168.1.254
Username: admin password: admin (by default, unless it was changed)
Interface Setup:
Select "Bridge Mode instead of default "PPPoE/PPPoA"
Save... done

then

I would recommend just setting up his computer with his accounts username/password, and your computer with your ISP account. This way you never need to reboot the modem, and wont mess around with any of his computers settings. you both just logon to your ISP when you put your computer on.

Adding a Internet Account: I can only check Windows Vista step by step cause thats what I am running, but XP was a little simlar.

Network and Sharing Centre (My Network Places XP I think)
Setup Network Connection (XP is Add New Network Place or something like that)
Connect to the Internet
Then read the options, its always on broadband that requires username/password..
Just follow instructions from there to make the ISP account on your computer.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the summery of all the ISP's is SA. What about IPS - Globalwebintact that offers uncapped, unshape, no contract, 24/7, 128 Kbps, subscription for R 350-00 per month. May there type of ISP's unofficial providers?

I live in Pretoria, and have looked at all the ASDL & broadband options: capped, chaped, costly, ect. I'm looking for a list of this tipe of ISP's in my area. The only reason I don't use GWI so that there is no line of sight the their tower, no signal. My home is apperently in a dip. I'm looking for the real braodband ISP's.

Thanks

Hey MrG,

I did not see this in your guide, but Axxess has an adsl now package. You can buy between 1 and 5 gb at a time, and you have 6 months to use it, and an even bigger bonus is you can top it up at any time during the 6 months. When the 6 months is up, you can just sign up for another.

I love it, no choosing whether to waste the last bit of your bundle or download like a maniac the last few days, and it's just R10 a GB more than the regular adsl package.

What ever, but just dont even give Gam a try Im sure anyone is better than GAM

Edited: Minor wording changes, and product changes.

Just saw this post from a link to another person asking...

MRG Very VERY nice breakdown and well laid out. Hopefully this will help more "newbies" to ADSL in SA

This is a very useful post - but for newbies it might be helpful to clarify that these are on top of the Telkom line rental fees, etc. I know it's not really the point of the post, but even though I know a bit about ADSL, I get confused about how much it will all cost at the end of the month!
