Which ISP to switch to

That's where I could choose Afrihost instead they only shape if you do p2p download during peak hours but mine are scheduled already to only run during off peak times so that cancels it out

Your call. My advice is given from experience. Use it, don't use it.

/fond memories of Afrihost shaping HTTP to 12% of line speed from 6am to 12am and calling it "testing"

...I am the source - I have 10Mb uncapped premium home account had no problems until recently, 720p YouTube streaming is very choppy atm, testing using different ISP accounts using a network monitor tool seemed to prove it...

I do download a fair amount tho (eg. alot of streaming and 500+ steam games with auto updates on)...

And no - nothing was downloading during these tests.

You're describing shaping, not throttling. Unless you've noticed impaired speed tests.

What sort of usage are you managing atm? I don't think CW is a good ISP for data hogs, unless you're on a capped account and are paying for the privilege.

Have you tried containing heavy usage to between midnight and 6am?

Have a friend on Afrihost and he said I should go for their Business Uncapped because it would make sense as I won't get throttled

That's because Afrihost have moved their bigger users onto more expensive "Business" accounts. It is poor form to have home users on business accounts. The CW Home Premium accounts are superior to the AH Business accounts.

I appreciate the advice and 6am to midnight? That's the whole damn day which is crazy

Will take a look at them. On a 4mb uncapped home premium with them what's the threshold you start getting shaped on?

Which is why I left and will never come back. The fact that they even CONSIDERED that tells me all I need to know about them.

@NickHunt7 ,

Plenty of advice already given, so I am not going to add to any of it, apart from what I have found researching and monitoring a few of the providers suggested on this thread.

Mweb: avoid if at all possible
Afrihost: Look at the threads dealing with Afrihost on the forum and make up your own mind about whether they are providing quality backup and fault diagnosis. my view is avoid.
CW: On the expensive side but other than that, very good to excellent support

One thing no one has asked you to do, is the evaluate your current ADSL line and provide some data on how well the line is physically performing. What is your current experience with your line itself? Run Zertop's line test tool and se what you get.

Yeah but does Crystal Web Premium have unshaped like most Business packages have?

I'm sure the network is managed on their end (obviously). The experience on my end though - Everything just works. There's a reason we are recommending them to you.

I'll run that when I get home and post it here. I mean I get shaped and I know exactly why I'm getting shaped but from what I know the line itself is fine during normal usage.

Will check that tool out and feedback

So I've decided to go with Afrihost 8mb Home Premium uncapped, haven't officially applied as the geniuses at Telkom are taking their sweet time cancelling everything.

However called Telkom this morning and they said that even though we submitted the cancellation this month and have to already wait up to 14 days for it to be completed once it's cancelled there's another 30 day notice period we have to serve before payment to them is fully done.

So basically if they cancel our line from next month in the first week of it we still have to pay them for the full month of July even though we've moved over to Afrihost and use them for majority of the month.

Anybody else experience that at all if and when they switched over?
