This is what I was worried about :p Hence I asked bsntombela for source...

I think the issue here is the OP asked what to study and not where, and lets be honest you're going to get a good education if you go to any of the places on bsntombela's list...

;) I should have listened and retracted my statement!!!

I disagree.

A BSc covers much ground and I would never take a consultant seriously if he did not do the equivalent courses. Understanding the difference between computer architecture vs computer organization when making suggestions is just as important to a small business as a large corp.

Damn, that means you wont take me seriously and therefore typing this is a waste of time :D

Anyway, my point is that a small business usually requires tactical deployments to meet a very specific need, i.e. they need to install a firewall/AV/Router etc. A university grad would not necessarily be better suited to configure GPOs than a techie with an MCSE....

I'm looking at consulting on business solutions for small businesses, possibly suggesting what type of software to run, advice on whether they need a website, the costs involved.

IMO programming encompass EVERYTHING you'd ever need to do consulting. Previous company I worked for started out like that. Programmer turned Consultant turned Boss/Sales etc, now have a staff of 10+ people 8 years later.

I do consulting as well... as well as the programming etc still. You get to know a lot of how business processes work that way and what technology you need to implement where etc.

Others may disagree
