Which mobile broadband package would you recommend?

I am currently on a R 198 per month iBurst option which gives me a few gigabytes of bandwidth. I am not a heavy internet user; I surf in the evenings and over weekends, sometimes watching YouTube videos and other times just browsing low bandwidth websites. I don't download movies or torrents or anything like that. I may be moving to an area with poor iBurst reception in which case I would like to get mobile internet with one of the other providers. What would you recommend for somebody like myself in roughly the same price bracket as I'm currently paying for my iBurst? I'd prefer not to take out a contract if possible.

R198 for 10GB any time and 10GB after hours is going to be hard to beat.

How many GB per month do you think you'll need?

Check the coverage maps of the mobile network providers, try borrow a 3G modem and do your own tests with prepaid SIM cards.

MTN 2GB for R149pm. Hard to beat, especially if you're not a downloader and just need Internet access for emails and a bit of social surfing. 7.2Mbps to top it all.

EDIT: If you want a bit more freedom, try their 3GB 'uncapped' package where they throttle you after your 3GB. We use it at work (the 8GB package) when the ADSL is down - at least you can get your emails and even surf, albeit at a pathetic speed.

Of course not. Stay away from MTN. Is the most unreliable network of them all regardless where you are. Vodacom have a similar offer and at least are more reliable. Cellc is the best though. 8ta is the cheapest but they don't have much coverage and if they default to MTN then you are back to square one

No. There was MTN announced special bundle 2GB R189 (delayed????). Otherwise 8ta GoBig 2+1GB promo bundle R149.
Cell C 3GB Smartdata voucher R399 valid for one year.

BTW, Vodacom don't have prepaid specials

I have to disagree with you in this one. I have been with Mtn for approximately 12 years, and in that time I haven't had any issues with their network. I changed my contract to top-up a couple of years back because they have great deals for top-up customer and to prevent surprises at the end of the month

I also have two Vodacom contracts that up for renewal later this year. One Business call and one Broadband contract which I also changed to top-up. I will be cancelling both Vodacom contracts since they don't have any good specials for their top-up broadband customers. Mtn currently has two specials running for their top-up customers: 20% extra airtime with each airtime bundle loaded and their 2gb data bundle now goes for R189.00 while Vodacom is offering me absolutely nothing.

I suppose that depends on where you are, because we all have Vodacom contracts (about 8 of us) here where we are, and we use MTN data because Vodacom data is pathetic here. 7.2Mbps on MTN and frikkin less than 10kpbs on Vodacom.

you might be right in a way. So many have left MTN for CellC that their outdated data network has found new life certainly it depends on your location. MTN will have do drop data prices a lot if they want me to promote them in the 3 cellphone shops I co-own. In the last few years (since CellC come into the limelight), we must have turned hundreds of customers away from MTN.
