Shows you how much you know about clocking,my i5 750 clocked 4ghz easy with 1.2 volts,and yes made less heat than what my amd 965 did at 3.7ghz.
The only thing you can compare a amd 965 with is the lga775 Q9550 and Q9650,and it still gets beaten by them.Also the unlocked multi means nothing as the amd cpu gets to its limits very quick without even getting near the unlocked multi,so why you bring that up i dont know.
The only reason to buy the amd would be if you realy cant get the extra R300/400,even then i would still begg,borrow or steal to rather go intel.

I know a dam sight more than you do about overclocking. I want a power efficient rig, so undervolting is the way to go. I do not want to be drawing an extra 100W or more just to get to 4ghz. The fact that my CPU can still overclock while technically not getting enough power is quite amazing. Then I brought up the unlocked multiplier because its easier to overclock that way. Many people are still afraid of the bios, so an unlocked multiplier that can be set from windows is a nice way to start getting into overclocking. Finally, you must have been doing something very wrong to get your 965 to run hotter than the i5 750. The 965 consistantly runs about 10 degrees cooler than the 750 in reviews I've read with both chips @4ghz.

Get a Asus/gigabyte M/B that does 8x Xfire setup, as your GPU's wont need anymore bandwidth then that.. But if it was me, keep the current GPU as a spare and pick up a 5770...

The amd 965 is a 140w cpu(new revision is 125w) and the i5 is 95w.Now to get the 965 stable at 4ghz you need min 1.45 to 1.5 volts.The i5 750 runs 4ghz with a 1.182 to 1.2 volts easy.
So where you get that the 965 uses less power and makes less heat,have you been to school yet?Watts and volts = HEAT my friend,the less you use the less heat is generated.

Undel full load a amd 965 uses more watts than i7 975 cpu(with all 8 threads running),so please get the facts right.

You cantradict yourself at every turn.

Correct, the 965 needs about 1.5V to get to 4ghz, but it only runs at 61 degrees on a crummy air cooler (proof). The i5 gets to about 69 degrees at 4ghz with a fairly decent cooler (proof). So 965 runs cooler. Then when overclocked to 4ghz the i5 or the 965 can draw up to 200W, that is what I was talking about about using less power on my setup with regards to undervolting. Also remember that every CPU will differ, eg one i5 750 chip will need 1.2V to reach X ghz, another may only need 1.1V. Finally, under full load (stock settings) by your very own reasoning (and real life testing) the 965 (125W part) draws less power than an i7 975 (130W part).

Please learn to read the post properly, get your facts straight and not call other posters stupid to get your point across.

Just to clarify, i am a retard, i dont have 4850's, i have 5850's x 2..hence why i wanted crossfire.

Hmmm, the you are on the border of saturating a x8 PCIe link. Best you get a 790FX or 890FX AMD board. Otherwise you'll have to fork out for a LGA 1366 motherboard for 2 full x16 PCIe slots on an Intel platform

Edit: the 5870 loses about 5% on a x8 link, so the 5850 should be fine. So you can still get a 790X board, or an LGA1156 board, both with 2 PCIe slots running at x8,x8. You shouldnt be able to notice the difference. But then you do limit your GPU upgrade options, though with two 5850s I guess you wouldnt need to do that very soon.

One think i dont understand,if a 5870 loses 5 % on a 8x slot then a 5970 on a 16x slot also does not have enough bandwith.Cause 5970 is 2 5870 running on one 16x slot.
So in theory there should be no loss on 8x slot.

Also archer the amd 965 was the 140watt cpu that used more than the i7 975,so it should be like that in real life also.We talking about the i5 750(95watt) againts the amd 965.
I had a amd 965 on a corsiar H50 and a 3.8 ghz it ran hotter than my i5 750 @ 4ghz also with H50.Also the i5 750 was way more stable when clocked than the amd.

There are some inherent losses to running two GPUs on one board. Also the 5970 is two 5850s, not two 5870s. Check the specs from AMD and you see that the 5970 runs at the same engine clock and memory clocks as the 5850.

Fair enough, I was talking about the newer 125W 965 which has been out for about 6 months now. They run much cooler and clock much better as well.

Edit: while the 5970 is clocked at 5850 speeds, it does actually consist of two 5870 chips, underclocked to remain within 300W

Yip 5970 is clocked at 5850 speed but uses the 5870 gpu's.So its closer to a 5870 than a 5850,so it makes sense that a 5970 uses more bandwith than what a 16x slot has to offer.I read review(cant remember where i saw it) that a GTX295 was about the limit for the 16x slot.

Anyway, the 5970 would come close to saturating a x16 link judging by its specs. But since there is no x32 slot around, you wont be able to know for sure. The 5970 does however definately get bottlenecked a lot by a x8 slot, and so does a 5870 but only by a little
 
why can't people see that it's a personal thing and bang for buck thing.I mean my rig cost me 10.5k and I could have easily gone the Intel/Nvidia route.Bit I decided to go the other way and my performance is not really that bad plus people must also take into consideration that one must build a rig with future proofing in mind.
 
Yip i reckon the 5% you said is about right.Pity as my stupid mobo has 5 pci slots but have to use the first 2 for 16x16.If i use first and third it goes to 8x8,cant use the first 2 as the 2 cards sits very close to each other.
 
Thing that worry me kelevra is that in South africa Amd is only available from 1 person as Amd is not represented in SA like intel.If he stops importing then amd in SA is gone.
