Hi there,

Been lurking these parts for years and now, have finally joined :)

Hopefully will be of some assistance in the future...

Have a bit of a conundrum:

Want to go Windows 7 64 but will need a compatible modem.

Any suggestions?

I'm certain others have struggled with this as well...

Anyhoo, apologies if this is posted under the wrong topic. :D

Running Win7 64 on my PC at home. Before the upgrade Vista Ultimate 64.
Only had one ADSL modem/router since I got my ADSL - Billion 7300 RA(G) the "G" being the wireless model. Not expensive, got mine for R550.00 (Computersonly). Easy to use, easy to set up - does its job

At the end of the day I would think it is a personal choice on how much you want to spend and how you want to use it - bridge mode, multiple accounts and so on. As a straight forward ADSL modem - works like a charm!! ;)

Cool, thanks Tango...

Really looking for the easiest solution here, not necessarily the cheapest. Although, not keen on ordering something, just want to go into a shop and get it...

I've heard that ethernet routers don't require drivers, is this true? How does one set it up then? This would be ideal as the main concern with 64bit is the availability of drivers

Any modem that has ethernet and is "stand alone".

Do not touch those usb ones.

Go for either D-Link, Billion, Netgear, Cisco or Linksys routers. Some Telkom routers aren't that bad either - since some of them can dial to multiple ISP accounts simultaneously.

Like Moederloos said: if the router is a non-USB one, then you don't need to worry about drivers, except for your PC's own LAN drivers of course.

You would save more by choosing your ISP accounts more wisely than picking a cheaper router :)
Doing Traffic Splitting (routing local & international across multiple ISP accounts: 1 for local only & 1 for international & local) could save you lots of money if you are using lots of local bandwidth for like email, banking, windows updates, etc.
dawbomb has started to make a generic script that you can run to do the traffic splitting on quite a few routers, instead of using an app/script on each PC: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=202201
He has also started to compile a list of supported routers. Just bare in mind that the list is quite new and still very much incomplete!

If you can specify more or less what your needs are for the Internet, then the people here can help you out to select a router that would suit you better. Like for instance when you are the only person that requires internet, without WiFi, then a cheap router would be suffice. On the other hand, if you are sharing your Internet with a couple of people at home and you want to dial multiple Internet accounts from the router, then you would probably go for something more decent.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Well, it's just basic personal use really... Nobody else uses the pc or connection, I've considered WiFi so I'd be able to share the connection with my iphone, but that seems excessive... Just a quick and easy solution is what I'm after...

So far looking at the D-Link DSL2500U it's got an ethernet interface but is nothing more than a modem... It's R300 so right up my alley! :D

The DSL2500U is a quite nice router if you upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Before I did the upgrade, I was unable to do port forwarding or DynDNS.

The DSL2500U supports half-bridge mode and it can also dial multiple PPPoE accounts if you want to do traffic splitting on the router itself! It doesn't have wireless though, but if you have a laptop with wireless, you could always host and ad-hoc WiFi network and share your LAN connection to allow your iPhone to connect to the Internet via your laptop...

SOLD! :D

thanks Pada, the Cafeviva in Claremont has stock so I'll swing by and grab it!

Now all I need are the settings which will allow me to get a connection! ^_^ To google!

*Apologies for being such a filthy stinking n00b.

Just make sure that you get an ADSL/pots filter along with it. You have to have an ADSL filter per phone. They cost like R50 a pop.
