Guys,

Any personal recommendations on a decent modular power supply (say 500W) that would not break the bank?

A friend told me that the Aerocool zerodBa one is nice.

Looking at spending around R500.

Thanks in advance

I recommend against a modular power supply.
Its less efficient, and cannot carry x amount of power for too long compared to a non modular power supply.

For Eg: Geforce 280/8800 GTX, they specifically state a non modular power supply is needed, and that a patch cable is only a temporary solution.

+1

I also don't think you will find one for R500, but I may be wrong..Possibly more like R700 ish

Yeah. I say if you spend R1 a watt the psu is usually crappy.

Have a look at the Antec Neo he 550watt
or
Zalman Hp-1 600 watt.

You should be able to get both from www.prophecy.co.za

Been using an Antec Neo and A Giga-byte Odin for awhile now with oc'ed E8400 and E7200 no probs whasoever

Actually PSU's are quite cheap.
A no name brand 500watt is approx. R299 retail

Yes. We know that. Did you know that the cheap psu's are crappy?

I didn't say psus were expensive. I said cheap psus are crappy.

If you spend less than R1.50 per watt you're taking chances.

Why would someone spend thousands on a pc want to power it with a R300 psu?

You're just asking for trouble.

Oops sorry, wasn't paying much attention.
Personally never had a problem with cheap power supplies.
Thou @ the moment using a Gigabyte 720 Watt power supply. Cost was R854, which is still cheap.

You are best off just spending the extra $$ and getting a decent PSU....Stick with a reputable brand name and it should last you a long time.

I've been using a RaidMax volcano for a couple of years, it's modular and works very well, probably not the best, but I like it a lot and hasnt given me any problems, with all the hardware (8800GT, 7800GTX, P940D [high power req for that CPU], Q9450 - 4sticks DDR2, 3 SATA HDDs). Cost me R700 bucks at the time, not sure what it goes for now. But you're probably better off with a more reputable brand like Corsair or coolmaster or something....

I'm using a Mega 500watt modular psu that cost me only R500 and have had not one problem with it. It's quiet and never had my pc restart due to lack of sufficient current flow. I got it here www.cafeviva.co.za.

It's really the luck of the draw, some people buy a cheapy PSU and it lasts forever, some spend R1k and it pops in the first week.....It's the chance you take...It is generally like that with any PC components.

Well I've learnt something new here ... I did not know that some gfx cards advise against modular PSU's.

The thing I like about modular PSU's is the fact that you get to manage the number of cables in the case.

You guys have convinced me to go for a more branded one. I will do some searching to see which one I can get for my budget (increased to R700).

I use a Corsair HX620W which I bought from Prophecy earlier this year. It's modular with nice flat cables as well, which helps with routing them and tying them up.

It powers my Q9450 and my 8800GTX no problem, nice clean stable power. It's also very quiet. I haven't yet overclocked anything, but I'm sure the supply would have enough juice left over.

The model is expensive, so maybe look at the 500 odd watt one, should be cheaper. Corsair make pretty good supplies.

As for the no name brands, they do generally tend to last long, but I've also seen them give up in ratehr spectacular form, and I've had some strange problems caused by them on anything other than office work type machines.

Good clean power is often overlooked by people when buying a computer, yet it can make a world of difference.

Im using one of the sexyest modular psu's iv seen....Its a 630w raidmax volcano psu
Beautiful for R749
