Hi.

I'm planning to soon buy my first vehicle, and I'm looking for some advice on what brand or make to look for. I'm particularly interested in vehicles that have a low cost of ownership as I have a very limited monthly budget to work with.

I'll probably be buying second hand and paying cash rather than buying over time, so those monthly payments aren't an issue, but more things like insurance, fuel, services, parts, etc.

Any suggestions?

Cheers.

Why does it depend on budget? What's the trade off between the two?

They are in different classes. Different size cars.

If you want small the fiesta, if big the Civic.

Honda jazz
some toyotas(note not all)

You should state your needs

size
hatchback or sedan, suv
usage
number of people you intend to transport
mileage used
safety preferences
age for insurance

I'm 28, and don't have many requirements, just need something reliable to get me safely from A to B. I'd probably cover a few hundred km a month.

A Toyota is also good.
Don't go for an obscure make, think with your head - after that the individual car is the biggest factor.

Go look at some cars. Then get pricing on insurance. That will also help make the decision easier.
Just FYI, Toyota and vw are quite high risk vehicles to get , no matter the model.

Honda jazz. 4 airbags on top of the range model. Full house. Cheap services, 2007 one was approx 74K.

They are bulletproof engine, gearbox. Hence they sell higher than trade.

Stable and fun to drive. Interior not the best. And the seats fold down flat so you can get lots of stuff in there.

Pick up a phone and find out what the following parts cost:
- Brake pads/shoes
- Brake discs/drums
- Clutch kit
- Gearbox (not normally a problem but an expensive item to replace if outside warranty)
- Tyres (this is often over looked - the price of 17 or 18 inch tyres may catch you by surprise)
- Fuel pump
- Fuel filter
- Air filter
- Oil filter
- Spark plugs

Those are the most common replacement parts of things that wear out, break or need to be replaced while servicing the vehicle.
Then get some insurance quotes.
Put all of that info into a spreadsheet and see which vehicle is the most expensive to own and maintain.
Then try buy with your head ...

would be nice if there was a system or website which maintained this list. I know the Kinsey report does it but its only for a handful of cars once a year.

Sorry, I've been busy with work the last couple of days. Thanks everyone for your input, it's been very helpful and informative.

My budget for a vehicle doesn't actually exist till I get a raise, and I still need to negotiate that so I'm not 100% sure what it'll be.

Thanks again though for all the info, it's very helpful.

I drive a Hyundai. I think they are excellent value for money.

When I first bought it two years ago I was concerned about reliability but I have done 60k km without a hitch sofar.
