hi there,

I have a pretty decent PC but its running like crud. my guess is that its the CPU which is bottlenecking but I wanted to double check here first.

E7200 @ 2.66Ghz (never been overclocked etc)
XFX 4890 Black Edition
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
Mid-range Gigabyte Motherboard (D45PQ series or something like that).

Thinking of getting a Q9450 to upgrade it for an all-round performance increase. is this the right move?

Cheers

I think your CD Drive is the problem. If that doesn't fix it, buy a LED light for your case.

*Yawn*

Sounds like a pretty decent set up. Unless you doing some intense processor applications it shouldn't run like crud.

Wow nice insightfull answers, s & s! hmmmm thought there were nice ppl here. what is it that running like crud? your pc should be quiet capable.

Pretty good spec system you have....should run like a dream.

PC speed is increased by....
1st - RAM
2nd - Better speed/cache HDD (SATA above IDE)
3rd - CPU
Somewhere in-between you can move from a 32bit OS to 64bit - to make use of the full 4GB & more RAM.
;)

running like crud when doing what ?coz the one in my sig blows hot air out the vents when i play assasins creed at 1900x1000 or sumthing like that with everything full.i would say mine is running like crud but i dont need a heater ,its going to be summer now:)

Most likely you just need a clean install.

If that doesn't help get an ssd.

Just try something like CCleaner and see what's cluttering it up. Probably just a software issue or time for a cleanup. Sometimes an SSD won't fix that.

Your PC shouldn't be lagging at all.. As everyone else has suggested, do a format and reinstall Windows. If this doesn't solve the problem, then I will be perplexed as to why it's not running smoothly.

stfury,

Give us some more info, in what way is it running badly?

If its just normal lag when you're surfing, copying files ie: just using Windows regularly then you may need a clean install, switch to a faster antivirus like NOD32, uninstall bloatware you're not using, run ccleaner, check for stuff in your system tray that you don't need and disable it.

If it's during gameplay, then what resolution are you gaming at? What games and what settings are you running them at, etc;

That rig should be flying, my wife has a lesser rig than that, (E6600+8800GT+4GB ram) and Crysis runs very well on medium detail at the native screen res (1280x1024) other titles fly unless you turn on 4xAA and 16x AF etc;

or are you running Duke Nukem Forever? :D

Ah, right. Apologies for my earlier reply, too tired for anything meaningful.

Your system should be running A OK unless you're running a CAD app that is rendering at max quality while playing Crysis.

I still recommend you upgrade to a Quad core as it'll give you great performance and the 7 series C2D's are getting out of date. Otherwise what I recommend is a fresh OS install, it will do wonders for any system that is a few months old and has many apps and un-needed stuffs on it.

Once again, as mentioned above, you need to describe what kind of performance issues you're having. It could be sorted by updated drivers.

its probably conflicting drivers/viruses/adware/other crap.

do a format and fresh windows install.

CPU definitely seems to be your weakest component there, but not by enough to create a major bottleneck. I think you'll find the same thing even after a CPU upgrade. Sounds software related. As others have said, perhaps a fresh installation would be the order of the day.

I doubt your cpu is causing a bottleneck unless you are running games that require more than 2 cores.

Reload windows, also look into getting a ssd drive it is about the biggest jump in performance you will get.

Nothing wrong with getting a better cpu but i cannot see why that 7200 is running your pc badly.

Dump xp/vista if you are using xp/vista and look into windows 7 possibly as well.

let me clarify running like crud :P Its not lagging at all - I'm running Win 7 32-bit and it runs windows fine.

I'm just get very disappointing frame rates in most of my games - I.e. I can't get constant FPS in TF2, and I can't get 240 constant in CoD4 - both with FPS configs. In all of my games my FPS is also fluctuating quite a lot, from what I can see;.

I've been told that how high your FPS goes depends on the graphics card, and whether it stays constant or not is dependent on the CPU?

Using 2 x 1.5TB Samsung Spinpoint Hard Drives. Thinking about reverting to XP as well, because my games get way higher FPS in XP, even if its 32-bit compared to win 64-bit (I tried an install of this and didn't notice any great achievement).

Shawt!

:O No difference in performance from Windows 7 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit???

I noticed the difference and I have an average AMD machine. Find yourself the latest PC Format and take a look at the Windows 7 article.

64 bit is faster than 32 bit, people say there is no difference but i can notice it.

If games are a problem get a better cpu for sure, still don't think 240 FPS in cod4 is that bad  lol
