Hey peeps,

So I'm new to the whole web development thing and at the moment and limited to making stuff look pretty (html/css). My mom wants a site for her company. The site has the following requirements
  • Login System (security is not important)
  • Catalog (easy to add/remove items)
  • Must look good (I can make themes/CSS)

I've never done anything like this and while I'm sure I could figure out ruby on rails and build the app from the ground up I would prefer to just use something like WordPress (mostly because its easy to make changes). Which platforms should I be considering for this? Will Wordpress work? Thanks!

Wordpress could work and has plugins available, Ruby on Rails would be overkill for what you're trying to do anyway.

Please don't refer to yourself as a web developer if you're limited to making stuff look pretty. Those are called web designers ;)

This is very important, if not the most important part of all. Otherwise some bored teenie will come along and "hack" your site. All of your products will be deleted and replaced with a few choice products that would make your Mom's clients blush :D

Haha, I never said I was a web developer. I said I was new to web development. And anyways I was under rating myself and know a bit more than just css/html :p

I've decided to go with joomla. The Virtuemart plugin seems to be pretty good.

Just ask if you need some help with Joomla/VM. It can get a little tricky if you want to get fancy.
