Which Programming Language

Try C#, it was a great gateway for me into plenty of other languages. Once I understood C# I could chop and change from language to language with minimal effort.

You can be backwards as much as you want, but the fact that companies like PayPal, Microsoft, Ebay to name a few have rewritten some of there services in JS show its power (server side). You can argue till your little hearts content, fact remains its going into those fields and will continue. Entire games being written in it, not forced at all.

OMG not that old straw man. And you call me amateur? Languages do evolve. Nobody ever said they don't. They don't change their core identity. Paypal and Microsoft can do whatever they like, it doesn't prove anything. You name a few areas it was designed for and think it's somehow moving into those areas.

It's like Nick333 said, you have a rather aggressive stance towards anyone who disagrees with you.

Actually unlike your closed. OMG IT'S A Clone. Mentality I'm a polyglot. I've mastered Java, C#, C/C++ etc.. As I said junior developer is junior.

With most of my work being done in C#, T-SQL (with specific focus on XQuery) and JavaScript, I have to agree with semaphore's stance on JS. Its versatility really has evolved in leaps and bounds the past couple of years and junior devs catch on to it quicker than they do C#. I'm talking from experience in training 6 devs the past 2 years.

Don't waste your time.
 
I wouldn't call anyone second rate, but I believe you have to judge each language on its own merit. Even C# is a completely different beast that it was 10 years ago with the introduction of generics, dynamic types and the like. Same goes for Java. Yes, the core language and syntax remained the same and only the framework kept evolving, but the same goes for JS.

Even PHP can be useful. :p

I like to see what the universities and training colleges are currently teaching. There are some languages which are quite common:
- VB.NET - Great starter as it's more english language natural than C# (like Delphi), but no real jobs. Would just be for learning and then switching. Very easy to switch to C# if you have learnt VB.NET.
- C# - Also a good language to start on. Can branch into either C++, Java or VB.NET from here.
- Java - Like C#, buy slightly steeper learning curve
- Python - I was quite surprised to see this on so many courses
- C++ - Usually only 2nd or 3rd year

Personally, I prefer .NET framework languages (VB.NET / C#) for learning as the Visual Studio IDE is easier to work with and that makes it quicker to learn.
 
I was waiting for somebody to mention VB.K@K :rolleyes:
