I've narrowed the choice down to two models:

SMC 7904WBRA vs Netgear 834g (gt?).

Anyone with experience (specifically with the SMC) that can help?

SMC is about R100 more than the Netgear, and looks to be a slightly more functional router with built-in support for DynDNS and multiple VPN passthrough, SNMP etc. Does the Netgear support all of this as well?

Also, how stable would you rate the Netgear? I've seen many reports of them falling over regularly and needing power cycling, getting very hot etc. vs not many for the SMC. (I intend to stick this thing away in a wiring cupboard, so if its going to need constant resetting, I already know which way to go!)

Thanks!

I own a Netgear 834GT. It does everything you require in-terms of dyndns( i have a dyndns account and i used to use dyn updater which was sooo slow, now with the router it takes like 1 second and ur IP is updated! :) ), VPN, SNMP. The router is designed like a bank, no one gets in! In-order for a person to access ur wireless network, their Wireless PC Card MAC address needs to be stored on ur router and the person needs to know ur Wireless SSID. I have never used a SMC so dont know what it can/cant do...
The one downside is that the router does get pretty warm, my wireless router runs 24/7, it sits on a desk in a well ventillated area but it still gets hot. I have never had a problem where iv had to reset the router because of heat or any reason for that matter. I only reset my router manually when i need to reset my Internet IP.
I own 3 Netgear products and they have all been well worth the money i paid.
I say get the Netgear!

I have the SMC router. Nice, although I do not use all the functions. Both makes have good names, although I personally think that Netgear is the better of the two (more stable and build from concrete, SMC is plastic). If I have a choice now I would go with the Netgear instead of the SMC ... mainly because of the Netgear's security and stability.
