If I want to be able to surf the net using a SIM card powered modem, what hardware should I be looking at?

I need it to be USB (not a PC card).
I need it to be open to any network (VC,MTN,Virgin)
I need it to be portable.
I need it to be able to work on a MacBook.

Suggstions?

TIA

Huawei E220's definitely the best option, doesn't really matter which network you get it from.

If your cellphone has bluetooth, rather use that option. GPRS modems are very outpriced in SA.
I bought a Motorola V360 just for that purpose - works like a charm! ;)
... and paying + R700 for a phone with all the bells and whistles is better than forking out over R1500 for a modem only.

As long as you only want GPRS that's fine, if you want 3G/HSDPA then its not really such a great option.

I am using my N80 at the moment and unfortunately the battery life on that phone sux. I'm lucky if I get to surf for an hour or two before it dies. It's not always possible to carry a charger around with me. I also use my cellphone for telephony (amazing hey!).

So is the USB modem being touted by MTN going to allow me to put SIM cards from other networks into it? Also, does it require its own power, or is it powered by USB?
