Which SSD to buy?

If they are all priced the same I'd get them in this order, Intel, Ocz, SanDisk, Samsung.

Samsung's the best out of the lot there. You won't be sorry.

While Samsung has the fastest SSDs, Intel by far do the most QA testing. SSDs are still new enough that things like Q/A testing and warranty are important.

i have a Patriot Pyro SE. was very decently priced ans speeds are very good! had it for a year and no problems!

OWC make faster SSDs. OWC is also assembled in USA.

Samsung make fantastic SSDs, would be my choice.

Which ones. The latest consumer ones only have like 1000 write cycles. The previous generation - one in my Macbook Retina, had 5,000-10,000 cycles.

Maybe enterprise SLC drives have more cycles but cost way more.

I don't know much about SSD's so I just compared the sequential read/write and random read/write speeds and I think OCZ Vertex is the best of the four, also I've been reading that they're one of the best SSD manufacturers. The Samsung 840 Series seems to have low write speeds compared to all the others.

I have a Samsung 840 Pro running here, has been for a while, no problems.

But, don't be in a rush to get one now. A good old disk drive is quite adequate.

SSDs are set for 2020 where the speed of applications are merging as the main priority which will require SSDs. And by 2020 all servers are expected to be converted to SSD storage.

I expect SSDs will get faster from now until then, we still have lots more years to wait ;)

SSDs are still too expensive. I agree. Only real role is for laptops where SSD allows you to really move around with your laptop.

Does this mean the life of an SSD is worse than a standard drive?

Samsung reduced the number of write cycles on their SSDs. The 830 series had more write/erase cycles than 840. In real life it may not matter however.

Haha yeah.

We all know how slow laptops are.

;)

Well the solid state nature is important. People use their laptops while walking around with them, bouncing them on their knees, in cars, on planes, even walk/run with them while powered on. An SSD is ideal for that.

Well the bottomline of the story and how we see the current evolution of technology, everything is shifting towards mobility. The durability of drives and their speed is becoming imperative yes.

I just think we still very much in early days with this and it's going to take awhile ;)

Yeah but the performance costs. I agree if one wants the best performance, but the second question is how much to pay for it.

So I'm leaning between these two extremes. I think if you make money with your PC - it's definitely worth it. Otherwise it's a luxury.

But besides that, the solid state nature gives the bonus in mobile computing. :)

No more head crashes!!! ^_^

I have decided to go for the Samsung 840 series. Thank you all for your help.
