So I've decided to finally get one of these bad boys...

Is the OCZ Vertex still one of the better ones?
I've had a look around and cant seem to make up my mind.

I think a 64gb would be enough but maybe you guys think otherwise.

Help me :D

Yes. Ocz vertex or Patriot torqx or gskill falcon.

Intel ideally, but they are prohibitively expensive.

I seem to recall that the OCZ we sort of mediumish on the price/performance scale.

Lots of reviews & comparisons out there. Try anandtech or ars technica.

You're thinking of the cheaper ocz agility. Intel ssds have slow write speeds compared to the rest.

Its just going to be used for day to day stuff and some games.
Nothing too serious.

I just want load times to improve as I am rather impatient :D

Intel is still the best. Might have slower write speeds but it's all about the random read performance.

The Intel X25-M or the rebranded Intel (Kingston) are the best drives atm. They don't deteriorate with time and random access times are great. They aren't cheap. Intel will be releasing 320GB variants soon, so it may be wise to wait for that moment as the 80GB, 160GB prices will surely fall.

Intel does not produce 64GB or 128GB drives.

The E variants have the fastest W speeds - but are the most expensive too. The M variant is plenty fast, with 230-250MB/sec read and 70MB/sec write. Remember you can also get a rebranded Kingston - flash it to Intel G2.

Some good reviews and info on SSD's in general at http://anandtech.com/storage/

I've found some X25-M's the 80GB version ranging from R2600-R2900 ish, Can anyone vouch for any of these shops?

Vexon ? http://www.vexon.co.za/Storage/Soli...X25-M-SATA-80GB-2.5-MLC-High-Performance.html
Skyserv ? http://www.skyserv.co.za/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=807
Sybaritic 4-5 weeks delivery atm http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=61_428&products_id=20856

Edit: For anyone buying these SSD's make sure its the G2

The other option is to wait till Intel release their 320GB X25-M. The price of the lower offerings should go down a bit. I heard it will be out Q1 2010.

I think this whole degrading thing has also been blown out of perspective a bit, sure if it does lose performance you will only pick it up in benchmarks. I mean does your computer run benchmarks daily? Let's say 4 year from now your ssd has lost 25% performance, so what? By then ssd's will be reading and writing at 1000mb/s and cost like 900 bucks for 2 tb :D. The way people talk about degrading you would swear in 3 years the hdd will not operate. Even if a ssd lost 50% performance in the next 3 years it would still whip any mechanical hdd.

What amazes me if your massive mechanical companies had not brought out ssd's. Very odd.

With the TRIM and anything non jmicron they hardly degrade at all.

It reminds of that micro stuttering problem, everyone predicts doom and gloom but the only way to pick up the micro stuttering was via a benchmark, in the real world nobody can notice it.

Man. It's just Intel fanboys. The ssds I mentioned have double the write speed of the Intel's.

Yea i am not sure why people are crazy over intel. The r/w speeds are slow compared to some other ones like my g.skill falcon R/W's at 200mb, i mean F that is massive.

Dude if you listen to peter about micro stuttering and ssd's degrading you will never want one. He makes them sound so horrid when in reality they are more than likely the best upgrade your system can get. I can think of nothing that has improved my computer as much as a ssd.
It is insane how fast they are, everything just runs like butter.
