Which Tab

Tab was not intended as a laptop replacement, I use both. Tab is great if you are on the road alot and need quick to mail etc while on the go.

Why do you want a tablet instead of a laptop?

Rather buy a laptop.
They are 2 completely different things. A laptop takes time to switch on, load up etc. It is big, low battery life.
Reason I love a tablet instead of a laptop, well beyond the fact that its touch screen and a nice E reader, is battery life and the Asus Eee Pad has 16 hours of it, well 9 hours of continuous use and 16 if you add the keyboard dock.
What he said.

Hmm I just don't see what I can do on a tablet that I cant do on my phone.

Yep, Tablet battery life is amazing, my Galaxy Tab10.1 does around 10-11hours of continous usage, and over a full day on moderate, these things seem to have hit the sweet spot between power usage and battery size.

Pooky
Its more about the size the display and mobility, the larger display is even easier to work with especially when web browsing yet at the same time its small and lite enough to carry around.

True true.

Heh, you moved from comparing a tablet to a laptop to comparing a tablet to a phone....surely you should see the irony in this? That is exactly where a tablet is positioned [somewhere between a phone and a laptop].

Things i've immediately noticed on my Tablet that is not on my laptop: GPS, Accelometer, Battery Life x 3 , Touch Screen , Cameras [front+back[ (and ability to actually take photos/videos with it, try do that with a laptop) , Speed of Applications/Startup/Usage (laptops aren't known to be instant-on/off).

Things i notcied on my Tablet that's not on my phone : Ability to read books, magazines , edit photos and browse in a much larger screen. Much easier to type email etc. Watching movies/tv is a ton better.

...

Well - not to sure about the benefits of paying R7,500 for the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 over the iPad now that it doesn't have a microsd slot.

They are very different creatures.
Tablets are light devices for content browsing and very light content manipulation.
Laptops are portable devices for both content delivery and content creation.

You can't work a large spreadsheet, create or edit a large document, run an accounting app, do large-scale email replies, etc on a tablet. You can on a laptop.
I use a tablet for wifi-based RSS, browsing, e-mail reading, etc. But it's totaly useless as a portable office on the road, with major office and productivity apps.

It all depends on what you wanna do.

If any of you are considering the Galaxy tab 10.1 you might want to google "Newton rings". It seems that the tab develops these as early as a week from the date of purchase.

A little patch develops on screen which looks like moisture. The screen starts flickering in that spot for a while. It has been reported that at least 40% of users get this.

DOnt get me wrong......the galaxy tab is a really beautiful tab to use. Really light and the screen res etc are amazing. Its really snappy with the dual core processors. Web browsing is really amazing. It might not have a SD card slot, but Seagate now has the wifi hard drives which the tab can access.

I suggest that you wait for the next batch of tabs which might have the issues resolved if you want a galaxy 10.1.
