It's always been easy for me :

LCD = Sony Bravia (What Hi-Fi Magazine still use it as their benchmark LCD)

Plasma = Panasonic (there's just too much praise for them, just search for it on Google)

Thanks for the replies. Just to check...is a 720p plasma the best option based on what I want to use the TV for? I already have a good CRT TV but I want a flat screen TV for my lounge.

And assuming a 720p plasma is the right option, what is the best option for R8000 - R9000 currently?

I've been going around looking for a Panasonic plasma, but it looks like they are very scarce.

I bet you one bagillion rands that you can't tell the difference on a 40inch screen. 50inch plus, definitely!

Im sure I can...
So you saying the 1080 is just a marketing gimmick?

To be honest I use my TV for the same, SD DSTV and even SABC with an aerial:eek: No complaints, works fine... and I know with HD inputs it will be better!!
But if you want the Plasma go for it.

Of course it's not a gimmick. I believe the general public are being lured into overpaying for a TV that is beyond their requirements. Some ppl will never use or understand the meaning of 1080p, but buy it because it's the biggest and best.

From the chatter around the web I've noticed one big argument which is can you really tell the difference between a 720p image and a 1080p image on a screen that is less than 50" in size? Most people can't apparently, unless you sit with your face against the screen.

But for those that are sensitive to quality you can tell the difference between a 720p and 1080p screen on a 40", such as your keen eyed self.

There also other considerations like how far you will be sitting from the TV and what you'll be using it for. For me it's 80% TV and 20% xbox = 720p for me for the next few years. If I had blueray and a PS3 I would probably go for full HD, particularly if I wanted 42-50" screen

Got to Panasonic's web site.....think there is a contact number.

Ask for a Panasonic Vieira - simply the best.

MyADSL users can on any size with their PS3s ;)

Panasonic Viera is certainly the best bang for your buck as far as plasma goes, just a quick sniff around the web will confirm that.

Unfortunately your problem is that I do not think you can get a 720p 42" Panasonic plasma for less than around R12k :(

Maybe have a cold shower and then save for a bit longer and get the Panasonic.

BTW I believe they come with a 4 year warranty from Panasonic or at least they did in January.

I hope you came right shaun323.

I am going to get myself the LG 42PQ30 from Game for R7999. The Samsung PS42B430 is also R7999 at Game.

The LG has 3 x HDMI (1.3) inputs and a USB input. The Samsung only has 2 HDMI (1.2) inputs and no USB.

I wanted a 50" but I just cant justify paying R12500 plus R1500 (extended warrentee) = R14000 for it.
The 42"s are R8000 plus R600 (extended warrentee) = R8600
Difference of R5400 which can go for a HD DSTV decoder.

yes, yes you can.

see if your 3d card has a 2nd output, and connect that to the tv, either through DVI-to-HDMI, DVI-to-VGA, DVI-to-RGB, VGA-to-RGB or whatever.....
