I have a question for you guys out there that can help.

If I buy a new PC or Notebook which version of Windows should I get with it?

Windows XP or Windows Vista?

for the moment windows xp woops :) i think

lots of drivers are not available to things like printers etc

but if you have a printer with vista driver then get vista

In the past MS allowed one to use a previous version of its software under the license of a more current version if the current version would not provide the required functionality that was available under the previous version. I do not know if this has been changed under vista as AFAIK there are a few licensing issues with vista. However if not it would be better to get vista.

if it is an OEM machine, like an HP laptop or desktop, it WILL only come with XP, but you qualify for the express upgrade, which is a free upgrade to Vista. If it is a custom build, check that all the drivers are available for all you hardware before going Vista

Well, my Notebook is a year old with Windows XP Home installed. I've used the Vista Upgrade Advisor to see if my notebook will run Vista and wich version. I should be able to upgrade to Vista Home but I know I should be able to run the Ultimate edition as well.

So I suppose If I buy a new Notebook that's faster with more Ram I shouldn't have a problem running Vista on it.

So I will ask for Vista and not XP.:D ;)

MS still allow you downgrade rights with Vista. You can downgrade, and bring the license back up to Vista when you are happy that the OS serves what you need

Extra for what? If you bought a new OEM machine from 27 October 2006 until today (today being until OEM vista released), you qualify for Vista Express Upgrade, which is 100% free, except for the download of the OS ISO. If you buy Vista out of hand, you don't pay for downgrading at all. I recommend an OEM machine.

Thanks for that info m8.

I wouldent upgrade to a newer version of windows till the first service pack is released...

I'd also wait for the SP with an MS product, especially with it being "Totally new" technology. I was on the official beta program, and oh my word, the bugs. And they didn't fix, just removed, and added the odd hack. Way to go MS. The problem is that you can't buy XP off the shelf anymore. It's all Vista now. Obviously you can downgrade, as discussed earlier. So either way you gonna get a Vista License. It's just what you do with it that matters.

how much would a 2 - 4 gig download cost 200 bucks thus your paying extra

i would never get windows vista now though, driver support is not so lekka :)

but if its just a lappy for work make sure printer drivers are available

Ok

Bought a Mecer Notebook with Windows Vista Home Basic installed on it for R5999.

Specs:

1.8Ghz AMD Sempron
512MB DDR2 Ram
80GB HDD
8-1 Multi Card Reader
DVDRW DL
14.1" Crystal Display

Definately not bad for the price. Everything runs smoothly on it. No problems at all so far. Will see how it performs after a few software packages are installed.

Check to see that all your peripherals are Vista compatible. I found that my HP D125xi (printer, scanner) isn't very well supported in that the duplex print option doesn't work and scanning isn't as integrated as before. My memory sticks also did not work and neither did a scsi scanner.

I've now upgraded to XP. :)

Did you run the Vista Upgrade Adviser?

I did, and it seems like everything will be fine except for on program that I don't use anyway.
