I just did the Schengen myself. Was painless.
Eastern Europe, a lot of the countries will accept Schengen, some which are not in the EU even. Double check before spending your beer money

Easy to do Schengen yourself. Then everyone uses the official agent at a cost ... whereas for quite a few countries you can bypass them and go directly to the embassy with your visa application for free - and it is quicker.

Sometimes it's better, not all scenarios and countries are the same.

For settlment visa's it is worth it, UK visa's are quite exepensive and there is no refund's if you did it wrong.
