One of the things that I love about this forum is that it is a living Wikipedia of information and instant force multiplier. No I am not being lazy, have looked around, but experience counts for more ........

OK, so I am starting to think ahead and planning a webshop for the new wholesale venture as well. Will appreciate any input and/or personal experiences you have had with various services / software.

Simpilcity - Would like it to be simple enough so that a non-coding, semi-computer literate person such as myself will be able to update and maintain said service.

Credit Card payments - looking to receive payments via CC on the Internet, will have merchant account set up in time. ( I Hope )

Deliveries - Need to hook up with with courier company or send parcels myself via postnet.

Any ideas or industry insights will be welcome.

PS. As with the POS system I have noticed that TurboCash also offers some sort of eCommerce add on, but R 4999.00 might be a bridge to far. It would be nice as it will ensure that everything is integrated.

Id personally write my own, but thats cause I do this **** for a living :D

Thanks Urban ! You guys rock !

Remember that wherever you are hosting the site you will need a static
ip address and a certificate that matches the host name and ip address

Hey remember once your shop is up to talk to me...

will add it to oneshop.co.za listings! ;)

Will also get you a nice hits counter.

Thanks I will keep this in mind, but in all likelyhood I will not go live before the ned of May. First have to sort out the bricks and mortar shop.

What is the benifit of oneshop.co.za ? - 20 words or less .........

You get cool logo for your site, they can see what others have to offer. and see you're better.

Basically by joining oneshop.co.za you get South African buyers visiting your online shop not just a random hits.

- hows that for under 20 :)

I must admit that it is in its early stages but it is growing at a very impressive rate

Oneshop is all about promoting your shop and also providing visitors with trusted shops that wont steal their money.

So what I actually do is purchase something from the your shop just to see if it can be trusted and also note the service level. (i wont be the first buyer :D , it will be random)
- this is among many ways I check your store.

I suggest using CS-Cart or TomatoCart - both are open source and functional enough. By the way, do you need to access PayPal payments as well? In some cases they're even more popular than credit cards.

Hey Draadloos,

Just came across your post and although we're late to the party; At the risk of shameless self-promotion, you could always have a look at our hosted offering. It starts out pretty straightforward with all the nuts & bolts to get you started and as your shop grows, we've got an evergrowing list of apps that'll add some advanced functionality to your store...

Before you dive into the world of ecommerce, there's just a few things to take note that'll help evaluate your needs for an ecommerce system:
-- How will customers be paying (EFT, CC, Payment Gateway, Cash on Delivery / Pickup)?
-- In what currency will my store be (There's some reserve bank restrictions that come into play when selling in foreign currency - which is why PayPal might sometimes be more of a hindrance than a help)
-- What will your shipping rates be? How will they be calculated (by weight, item count)? And what about free postage?
-- If calculated by weight - have ypu actually got the weight of all your products?
-- How will stock control be managed?
-- Will you have any discounts at times (e.g. Christmas / Valentines)?
-- Does it need to integrate with any other purely South African companies (e.g. PriceCheck)?

In sum, the big three to answer is postage / shipping, payments and stock control: If you got the answers to those, you're set to:
1) Evaluate ecommerce solutions out there (whether it's cloud-based or self-hosted)
2) Start selling!

Lemme know if you've got any questions, I'm happy to help where possible...

Kind Regards,
Riaan - GoCommerce
