Which wireless router please

Get the cheapest one with the port and wifi u need, ive had about 10 different ones, they all break. The cheapest single wan port ones seem to last longest, but since u need wifi just grab the cheapest one.

I have a much beloved Netgear DG834GT which I've had for about six years. Lasted quite a long while and has been a reliable companion.

Unfortunately, its time is pretty much running out. Far too many power failures and spikes have resulted in it seizing up, dipping and basically being completely unreliable.

I have absolutely no idea what routers are good any more :(

I have to agree with BrokenLink though--go with whatever works best. I don't trust the cheap stuff though, but I think that's just that odd placebo effect that makes it feel like something that costs more must be worth more. Often though, I find it is :p

But if lightning is your problem, go for cheap since it'll just be a matter of time until it blows again.

And I know nothing about lightning/surge protection :D

Thanks for the replies. A few years back I always thought that the more you spend on a modem the better it will be, I guess that is all relative. My point is that the difference between a R400 300 wireless N modem and a R1200 one is probably up for question.

I have been super good at unplugging mine for about 2 years until the day I forgot :p

I think I am going to take a chance on the R373 Trendnet. It can't be any worse than this old Netgear I am using?

Well that's how it is: R300 or R1,400, a bolt of lightning popping in to say hello tends to have the same effect. It doesn't really care too much about the value of what it strikes. Although, Murphy's Law, it would always favour the expensive toys.

It's a router. They're all (pretty much) the same.

Only thing that would bug me about that one is that it doesn't seem to support UPnP (at least not according to the specifications). If you don't like manually port-forwarding, that might be a problem for you.

Lightning doesn't care how much you paid.

Happy with my W8960N but that Trendnet is cheaper.

Ok done, ordered the TEW-658BRM, If god decides this modem is not worthy so be it.

Hi Grim
Let me know if you want to get rid of the old netgears

I got a router from Telkom (a mega200) over 10 years ago. I unplug it during severe storms. It's still doing it's job. Maybe they don't build them the same anymore.

To be dead honest with you...Netgear is such a great router, I have the DG834Gv5 and Im very very happy with it.
The user interface is so simple once you get the hang of it and I have never had any problems with it. (Although it does get quite hot when heavy data is being transmitted through multiple pcs,but that hasn't caused any problems)

Also, Trendnet sounds a bit dodgy...their prices are cheap...too cheap. My father has signed up for ADSL and we are going to buy This router and use the new one for the house and the DG834G at the office.

My TrendNET TEW 658BRM is total k@k it loses connection all the time even though set to always on.
Good luck hope yours is fine.

I have the TP-LINK W8960N and definitely wouldn't recommend it. Poorly designed web interface which the company has shown no interest in improving and has a habit of becoming unreachable, needing to be switched off to get it functioning again.

What does differ is the quality of the firmware and the web interface.

I think you should do more research and consider what you want to do with it.

The reason I say that is I have a billion router (BiPAC 7300N) that has worked well for me. When a friend applied for ADSL i recommended Billion because I was already familiar with it and anticipated support related calls from dear friend it it made sense to recommend something I already knew about.

Soon though he started experiencing problems with his Billion (not sure the model). It was something to do with his 3g sleeping and loosing connectivity. Hed opted to change to a Netgear (not sure the model either).

Netgear turned out to be a disappointment as it did not allow for any other dynamic dns provider other than dyndns.com

The point is, even a well recognized brand can have its flaws. So do your research.

Done done and DONE! Thanks, absolutely no point in wasting money.

NOW wtf do I get? Powerful wireless would be nice as my house is fairly big, I just want something stable. Any recommendations?

I just ordered the TP-link w8968N was R459 with mybroadband discount at uniterm direct.
http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=1_55_57&products_id=853
And also some 8dbi antennas was only R39
Looks like a nice router since it has a USB port and you can change the LAN port to WAN port.
