Which wireless router please

I am surprised to read this. The RT-N66u has had a remarkable improvement for me in the wireless arena. There should be Tx power adjustment setting. It is normally set at 80mW (out of 100 or 200 - can't remember which) - at least, mine was at 80mW when I got it.

I am also really surprised, thought it would at least be able to deliver a decent wireless signal. Its pretty much useless. I have to go back to using my dead Netgear DGN2200 as a wireless access point, which ironically sits right next to the Asus, but pumps out a much better signal.

I have tried to look for the Tx power setting but can't see it. Will google it.

Also look for the latest firmware in the link you posted earlier. Maybe they improved the wifi drivers in a later version

Yip. Upgraded to the latest firmware earlier.
Other than upgrading from G to N (both in the router and in other receiving WiFi cards), a new router will not make any significant change to signal reception. That reception is more related to other factors. Some can be better understood by using measurement in dBs (five bars is almost useless for learning this).

If your WiFi manufacturer does not provide software quantifying signal strength in real time and dBs, then try Netstumbler. It only works for some WiFi chips. But an equivalent tool is necessary to first find, then fix, WiFi reception problems. Routers will not change nor fix that problem.
