Bains were making Whisky in 2001?

I'm in love
I think the special releases and the private barrel collaborations are having a positive effect on the people who are "into" whisky. They in turn makes suggestions to friends and family on purchase decisions. For example I introduced a friend to three ships 5yo based purely on my experiences with the brand and the more special things they were doing. He's not a whisky enthusiast but the price and quality appeal to him. I think the brand is certainly spoken about more positively in the last few years. I also think it's possible we will be seeing more things labeled under JSD in the future which might unshackle them somewhat from the three ships name.
My 2c (to be taken neat)![]()
Someone laughed at me for drinking Three ships, I then asked them what they thought of the whisky I was drinking which was the 8yo masters release and they said it was very good.
The basic three ships is in my opinion sort of holding the brand's reputation back. The 5yo is an amazing whisky for a blend, I almost didn't give it a try but now it's basically my regular dram, I honestly prefer it to a lot of more expensive whisky, especially since it is closer to what I like (peaty whisky). I also think the 10yo single malt should rather be a 6-8 yo and priced much lower (hell even the 10yo is priced quite high, although it compares rather favourably with the likes of Ancnoc). I really hope I get a chance to try the private barrel JSD (but I probably won't be able to as they will sell out soon and I've spent too much on whisky this year) and more masters collection releases.
I also think it's a damn shame the 5yo isn't in every bar! I mean there's a lot of 'proudly south african' sentiments but not stocking our own whisky is silly. Bains does get stocked and has a really good reputation though so that's good, I just am not really a fan of whisky that sweet heh.

I've emailed them to confirm the year of release and the abv, I'll pm you when I get a reply.

I'm loving it on some ice
Where can u get the Private Barrel JSD, I want to add more to my collection.
I've seen it still around in a few Checkers Liquor shops in the Western Cape (Stellenbosh/Durbanville had at one point), my local one has two bottles left and I'm very tempted but wow my wallet says no...
Just go and make your notes beforehand to see if they really do discount their Whiskey. You'll probably get 20% of next week Thursday until Saturday from Checkers on all their single malts.
