Thanks- that does seem a lot more agreeable.

The bottle in question was Jim Beam Red Stag which to the best of my knowledge is no longer being imported by the distributors (I wouldn't mind being proven wrong on this one). I friend of mine is crazy about the stuff and I was thinking of sourcing a couple, but not with those shipping rates.

Theres a very good chance that I have a bottle of this vile liquid at home. Impulse buy, opened it, tried a dram and put it back into the cupboard never to be touched again. You are welcome to it if I can find it. Where are you based?

I'm in Pretoria / Centurion.

It's usually around R500 at Makro and IMO a better whisky than Lasanta.

Hey guys so I had szazerac rye a while back and really liked the rye bourbon.but it's not easy to find in Pretoria. I had buffalo trace good but Def not complex enough. Had bullit bourbon which has rye not to difficult to find and really enjoyed that. Is there something else similar to the szazerac rye that's easy to find?

Eagle Rare is slightly similar but not a rye. Sadly I think you'll have to wait till Sazerac is back in stock at stores. Rye's aren't that available here and are often priced higher outside of America, where bulleit rye and bulleit bourbon are the same damn price.

I'm a big fan of Bulleit Bourbon and have the Rye which was on bottega (sold out). But it's good to see more people being interested in Rye. Bottega does have some Ryes but Bulleit Rye is a different beast to Sazerac so your experience may differ.

Also in Pretoria, couldnt find anything around here but took a drive to NGF in Kyalami where they stock Sazerac so that may be an option.

Otherwise not too many rye options around, have tried these bourbons which I really enjoyed for R600 or less :

Elijah Craig Small Batch ( available at Liquor City )
Woodford Reserve Doube Oak ( good price at Makro )
Bulleit which you've mentioned
Makers 46 ( Makro )

Knob Creek has also been recommended before but I haven't tried it yet.

I had Bulleit Rye Whiskey at a pub recently, and actually didn't like it very much. Good thing I had the rye whiskey at the pub because it saved me from buying the whole bottle and then realising I don't like it.
