Two Keys for R105 (Tops). I usually buy 1 JW a week for R289. Found a very decent replacement :D

Oh the Jameson Select Reserve is good. Wife and I finished the remnants of our bottle some time ago and I will probably get another but the JW Black is very good. As you said, personal preference.

just did a search on Makro, returned 6 pages of whiskies under R200 many of which I'm not familiar with, must be something better than Johnny Red or J&B in there somewhere?

I honestly can't think of anything for ~R200 that I'd consider decent. Even the entry level single malts like Glenfiddich 12 et all are around R350? now.
 
Mine. Has a gentle taste and doesn't assault the senses. Very smooth.

What about the 3 ships whiskeys (5 yr and 10 yr old)?
These won best whiskey of the year some time back.
I have never tried them though.
 
Hey guys, am looking to get a bottle of whiskey for a friend, trying to judge based on a range of prices. What would you guys recommend for R350 -R500 price range? (I already have some options above this but any recommendations for R500-R700 are also welcome)...

Jameson Special Reserve 12yo at Makro for R499
 
Sjoe. Do you know what your friend drinks regularly? Whiskey is very personal ... some may prefer theirs light & delicate like Glenfiddich or Glenlivet while others prefer the smokey rich monsters like Lagavulin or Ardbeg.

If it's just something for display in the cabinet, Monkey Shoulder is a safe bet ... Nothing overwhelming, nothing wow with a nice looking bottle.
