Just bought a bottle of Bains at Checkers for R179.

I love a few shots of Bains after work.

Vat 69 is considered to be far underpriced locally, by the tipplers from abroad.

Yeah, I've heard the same. Moreso, given Ralfy's review. I've yet to try it myself though.

I've been dopping Teacher's. It's pretty decent but more of a 'needs dash' whisky.

Cheers

Generic comment addressed at nobody in particular.... Id seriously suggest upping the price range a bit. If you think about it a nice bottle of wine is fast approaching a 100 bucks and won't last long. Meanwhile a 300+ Rand bottle of whiskey will last you quite a while (depending on habits). Seems like a rather good deal to buy something decent then

Opened my Jura 10 year old tonight. Delicious!

Got a bottle of Three Ships 5years as a gift. I'm not one to complain or seems ungrateful, but that 5 year taste like a pork chop that's been smoked too long in a Weber knock off. I'm not one for this South African blended and bottled whiskies. From now on, I will only accept Scotch. :D

No and I will never.

:p

I only drink Irish whiskey...can't stand the Scottish (and SA stuff). I've tried Chivas Regal in an emergency and had to switch to straight water.

OK. Just want someone who knows both to compare them... before I go spends almost 300 on a bottle ;)

Just curious which Scottish whiskies you have tried?

And on the SA side of things, I assume you haven't enjoyed Bains?

no. i already have the 3ships. R180. Jameson about 270-ish, right?

Three Ships. And somewhere in the archives of my cobweb filled memory I recall someone saying not to drink anything with numbers in its name.

^Yeah, the black label's pretty decent. Wife will be jetting overseas next month. Hoping to get something from the duty free. Any recommendations? Also, how much difference will the duty free make?
