Thanks for this! I've tried Singleton before and I was pleasantly surprised, to be honest, although it was one of the cheaper bottles if I'm not mistaken. I've been looking at Glenmorangie for a while now, and I see TAKEALOT has a gift box of the cheaper 10YO. I love me a gift box with glasses, to be honest... :D

I'm now thinking that I'm going to rather get a few bottles of the cheaper stuff than to splash on a big bottle in one go. It'll give me more to taste and to get a feel for the distilleries than if I go out and buy a single bottle. It'll also soften the blow if some people who like to visit gets up and comes back with a glass full of coke and fancy whisky. Yes, I know people like that... O.o

I'm keen on giving Ardbeg a go though. Still cheap. Maybe it's just the Three Ships 3YO I don't like?

The Glenmorangie 10yo is a really good whisky for the money, should be right up your alley. How about some Irish? I'm really enjoying the Jameson Cask Mates, can be had for R300 on special.

As for the peaty stuff: I'd suggest going to a decent whisky bar that offers tastings if you don't want to buy blindly. Some places will even create a custom tasting for you based on a profile or what you want to explore.

What's also well worth doing is a whisky tasting with friends. Everyone splashes out a bit on a bottle, you all get together and taste them all. You can make it as formal or informal as you like. Set a price range so everyone knows what to expect (budget). The group I'm in tends to set a theme, you need to provide a food pairing and you need to present a bit of history and tasting notes on your dram. So it helps you learn a bit more while you do your research. Above all it should be a fun learning experience :)

Well, the company I work for is very much into creating these kinds of "clubs". They have things like a Poker Club, Gaming Club, Wine Club, Crypto Club, etc. etc. all partly or fully sponsored by the company. I am highly considering starting a Whisky Club, actually. Might be a good idea to taste some other whiskies.

Also try a Bowmore that has a green label.on it, can't remember the actual name. Pretty decently priced and not peaty at all

Will do for sure. Just need to make a presentation first, and then get it approved by Exco... :D Anyone with any tips or ideas to make the Whisky Club more attractive to the directors?
 
Small collection

Well, I can't post Pics yet but I expanded my small collection to the following:

  • Glenmorangie 10yo - Good Stuff
  • Glenmorangie lasanta - Great Stuff, my favorite so far
  • Laphroaig 10yo - Peaty, but I like it for some reason...
  • Tullamore Dew 12yo - Good stuff

I'm not sure what Nikka I had before, but it was exceptional. Too pricey for my pocket, but great stuff! I remember it as medium on the peaty scale, less than the Ardbeg 10YO but more than your Speyside whiskies (which I also seem to prefer).

Thanks! I think it's going to be down to my personal appreciation of the peat.
