Take a look at the Glenlivet nadurra olrosso or even the first fill. Can't find it on takealot via mobile, but it was there in the past. Both the 15 and 18yo are also very good.
From what you described about not linking smokey whisky; Laphroaig, ardbeg, bunnahabhain, lagavulin are probably all off the table.
Things that you'll probably like that's on takealot. Glenmorangie, singleton, macallan, abelor, balvinie, classic laddie.
Thanks for this! I've tried Singleton before and I was pleasantly surprised, to be honest, although it was one of the cheaper bottles if I'm not mistaken. I've been looking at Glenmorangie for a while now, and I see TAKEALOT has a gift box of the cheaper 10YO. I love me a gift box with glasses, to be honest...
I'm now thinking that I'm going to rather get a few bottles of the cheaper stuff than to splash on a big bottle in one go. It'll give me more to taste and to get a feel for the distilleries than if I go out and buy a single bottle. It'll also soften the blow if some people who like to visit gets up and comes back with a glass full of coke and fancy whisky. Yes, I know people like that...
I'm keen on giving Ardbeg a go though. Still cheap. Maybe it's just the Three Ships 3YO I don't like?
