Must admit. I prefer my Auchentoshan. As mentioned in another post here, the 12 is actually better. Maybe just cos it's cheaper and about the same taste profile.
The new whiskybrother Three Ships is impressive. The peat presents as asphalt/tar and the finish is long and lingering. There are some subtle red fruit notes and it's certainly unique.
If I ever tasted this blind, I'd have probably said this might come from Kilchoman as it does to some degree reminded me of the taste of the Kilchoman STR I had but I might have also thought Bowmore. It also doesn't feel like it's just a year older than the private barrel fino cask, it's much more refined and you don't feel the alcohol. A drop of water seems to make it a little brighter.
I really hope we see a release like this in the future, a batch 2 perhaps!? It's so good and if it retains that kind of price bracket well, wow!!!

Your tasting notes are spot on. Exactly what I picked up from the shot I had at the bar.
I do like it BUT I need to spend more time with it, just like I had to do with the fino cask release. The day after we tried the fino cask at the CWC event, I sat down with it alone and that's when I really appreciated it. I need to open my bottle and do the same with this one.
It's very difficult to really appreciate it when you're chatting to Andy, Luben, Merrel from the distillery and another five okes you know from around that have also arrived at the bar to fetch their bottles.
Yes, I quite like the Jameson IPA as well.
Which leads me to another question. Makro has the Glenfiddich IPA, but it's R1k for something I'm not sure of- and it will be the most expensive bottle for me to date. Can anynone give an opinion? I have ucount rewards so it will be 'free' if I do take it, but on the other hand... Those ucounts can be spent on something else as well.

To be honest- I don't really know. Most things are too expensive for me to buy outright- R500+ a bottle net vir sommer, or just to see if I might like it, is a bit ott for me right now- so my experience is a bit on the thin side. I do like the Jameson IPA (and Jameson in general). Most of the stuff I have tried is around the R300 mark, with one or two a bit more expensive. I have a leaning towards bourbon as well- and do like some of the sweeter stuff. The reviews on that are mixed. Rather spend that money on something else. The glenfiddich project XX that came out at the same time has much better reviews. Also has an interesting back story to it. I have not tasted it yet.
What's your taste profile? Maybe we can make some suggestions![]()

I'm a Glenfiddich fan but I really don't like the IPA. I'm not a fan of the Jameson IPA either, actually not am I a fan of most triple distilled whisky generally. It seems you like the lighter whiskies so I would suggest the Yellow Spot in your price range.Yes, I quite like the Jameson IPA as well.

That's because IPA is the world's s**ttiest type of beer and it's a travesty that they ever thought to bring it near whiskyI'm a Glenfiddich fan but I really don't like the IPA. I'm not a fan of the Jameson IPA either.
