That's because IPA is the world's s**ttiest type of beer and it's a travesty that they ever thought to bring it near whisky
While I agree that aging a whisky in an IPA barrel is idiotic, I can't agree with your IPA statement. IPA is a beautiful style of beer. If you're not a hophead, you won't like it, but it's still a very nice style. It's like saying coffee is the shittiest hot drink because you don't like coffee.

Different tastes for different people and all that. Some people like Budweiser, for example, and that's not even beer.

I'm not even going to dignify your pro-IPA bulls**t propaganda with a response :p

On your second point, did you know that there are two different Budweisers: the sh**ty american one and the original one brewed in the town of Budvar in the Czech Republic? The latter is actually quite delicious.

Indeed. Few people know of the proper one, but it still comes in green glass though, so still not the best.

A spoil from Madrid duty free...

I have a bottle of the first edition of this Oban and now this one. I might open this one, seems to be getting favourable reviews.

Would it have hurt them to throw in another 6% ABV? What's the point of a special release if you're going to scrape it through on the minimum ABV? Leaves very little room for a bit of water experimentation.

I'd still give it a go though

Money talks...especially in the Travel releases. The more water you add, the more bottles you can fill and sell.

The lower ABV also makes it "easier to drink" of course, making it accessible to the bigger audience.

These days the marketing team dictates...but luckily there's enough other bigger stuff out there to suite everybody's tastes...

Also, legalities. Remember higher ABV is also more taxes. Lower ABV is cheaper to bottle as well, as you get more bottles from the batch. All the above combined, I wouldn't read THAT much into "special edition". Besides, it's also been chill filtered and coloured, so it's really not THAT special.

I'm not saying it's a bad whisky. I've never tasted it, and I'm a big Glenfiddich fan, but I'm just saying that they could have approached that differently from all angles if they wanted to make it a "special release".

MOM has the TBWC Three Ships on special, R808.

I have an issue with TBWD designing a cool label and then charging those prices for 500ml of exactly the same product.

Secondly don't forget to add +- R 1200 to that price for shipping, duties and clearance... ;)

My philosophy is that a product is only worth what someone is willing to pay for therefore people are allowed to charge as they see fit. The market will determine whether it's worth the price.

It's a lot cheaper than the approx. R1600 the local retailers are selling it.

My order of 6 items cost around R1000 for delivery. Will see next week what customs and clearance comes to.

I think that's everybody's philosophy..it's called the Free Market. So some poeple decide it's worth the money and others think it is not.

Local retailers buy it from MoM or The Whiskey Exchange and add their margin and a % of shipping.

Delivery only becomes "affordable" if you buy enough items, which, in turn, you need to have money for.

Bottom line: if you go onto MoM and only buy that specific bottle you mentioned, it will cost you +- R2k, so merely saying it's on special for R808, is not entirely accurate is it?

See below my most recent order from Mom and the additional DHL bill for vat, duties and clearance:

Saying that it's on special at R808 is correct, that is not what you're disputing. The total cost is not R808, therein lies the problem. For those who have previously purchased from MOM would already know this. For the newby, they would figure it out, we're all adults here and if you're on this forum then I would assume they would the intelligence to figure out the landed costs.

If someone else posted up the deal I would have been grateful as I was wanting a bottle or 2 so I did the same.

This is my order, I'll post up the details of duties and clearance when it arrives:
Subtotal:£310.52
Shipping:£50.28
Grand Total:£360.80

This was my previous order when the exchange rate was R18(Feb 2019) to the pound, worked out to R17000 in total with customs and clearance.
Subtotal:£751.73
Shipping:£63.36
Grand Total:£815.09
