Depends on a few things I guess, but a good start would be your budget and how you are planning to drink it ( cocktails, mix, neat etc. ) ?
The best commonly available, i'll drink jack over Christmas... But apparently it's considered an inferior whiskey in the states. Bourbon is my favorite so i'm looking to find the special one: 500 < Budget <5g. On the rocks

 So by commonly available do you mean you just want to walk in to the local Tops/Pnp and pick something up?

The special stuff you're more likely to find online or at NGF, Bottega so a lot more options there.

Otherwise if you haven't given Buffalo Trace a try that comes highly recommended for sub R300, R300 - R500 readily available options would be Bulleit, Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve & Knob Creek.

Liquor City have a few bourbons other chains don't stock, if you have one nearby the Elijah Craig Small Batch is great.

Never saw this available in shops, although I was never really looking for it.

Need to add to my collection. Ardbeg or Laphroig? Also, what is the best bang for buck Jura?

Thanks

Ardbeg 10 vs laphroaig 10? Tough choice. Both are really good. Whichever is cheaper at the moment?

Jura 10 I think is good bang for buck. Prophecy is really good if you're in the Peaty stuff. You should also check out kilchoman, Highland Park and bunnahabhain.

Might get that Laphroaig select that Dualmeister posted thanks.

Never tried an old fashioned before so wanted to try one today but the liquor store had no bufflo trace so had to buy Knob Greek small batch.

So is it supposed to taste like Jack Daniels? Its really really sweet but not something I really enjoy, too much Jack Daniels taste.

Depends what recipe you followed. Maple syrup is probably not as sweet as sugar syrup. Did you add bitters? Also dials back the sweetness. Nothing stops you from using less of the sweet stuff.

On the plus that Knob Creek is a lovely bourbon. Good neat or over some ice.

Try this recipe

Plus add orange bitters as well

Used bitters, used orange peel etc but perhaps its just too sweet for me. Even trying the bourbon neat is too sweet

I used the following:

Obviously with Knob Creek

If bourbon is too sweet neat, then an Old fashioned will just be worse for you.

You could try rye whiskey - I hear it is less sweet than bourbon. But I've never had rye whiskey, that is next on my list.

Saying that it's on special at R808 is correct, that is not what you're disputing. The total cost is not R808, therein lies the problem. For those who have previously purchased from MOM would already know this. For the newby, they would figure it out, we're all adults here and if you're on this forum then I would assume they would the intelligence to figure out the landed costs.

If someone else posted up the deal I would have been grateful as I was wanting a bottle or 2 so I did the same.

This is my order, I'll post up the details of duties and clearance when it arrives:
Subtotal:£310.52
Shipping:£50.28
Grand Total:£360.80

This was my previous order when the exchange rate was R18(Feb 2019) to the pound, worked out to R17000 in total with customs and clearance.
Subtotal:£751.73
Shipping:£63.36
Grand Total:£815.09

Here's the customs worksheet for my order. DHL clearance fee was R150.

I must say, considering how inexpensive Buffalo Trace is, its really, really good. Its so easily drinkable - just two shots of that with a bit of ice is really good. I like old fashioneds made with it, but sometimes I just want the bourbon on its own.

I tried Jim Beam over the weekend - family friend had a bottle. The cheapest Jim Beam. I find it disgusting. Jack Daniels is always good, but Jim Beam is just terrible. I don't know why.

And I got given a bottle of Scapa Glansa for my birthday, which is pretty good. Extremely smooth.

Why not try bains? also very similar in pricing and very similar to buffalo trace but I enjoy it a lot more.

Has anyone been through ort recently?
Going somewhere remote and wondering if I should pack my own special bottle or instead pickup something there.
