So this weekend i finally got to try the An Oa and the Corry side by side. Really really liked the An Oa but not so much the Corry - the medicinality of the Corry just isn't my thing. AN Oa on the other hand - i could drink it everyday.

I also got a Kilchoman Sanaig and that's also very very nice. It reminded me of the Bunnahabhain Cruach Mhona. The peat bombiness lingers long after your're done with it - it would pair very nicely with a cigar

Finally got to taste the Tamnavulin as well and for those who like Glenmorangie Lasanta / Nectat D'or finishes - this will be right up your alley

If you liked the sherry finish on the kilchoman then check out the kilchoman Loch gorm. Lovely sherry forward Peaty goodness.

That tamnavulin is well priced IIRC.

My current bang for buck dram is the crabbie 12yo. Couple of friends have also sunk a hole in their bottles. Does well as a daily driver or easy opener for the evening.

Wow what a label...but more than R3k for a bottle of just above average Whisky? If you can afford to collect "pretty" Whisky then sure, but these are not in my wheelhouse.
Kind of like an iPhone. Pretty to look at, but there are other phones with way better specs out there.

Did you look at the ages of the whisky they used in that blend? I'd say the pricing is probably ok given how old some of them are.

But I'm with you on compass box pricing. Just too expensive for me. If you're a collector and you're happy to look at it and maybe flog it in a few years compass box is probably a safe bet. Me I like drinking my whisky.

You're 100% correct...there is some seriously old Whisky in that blend indeed. And Compass Box has elevated blended Whisky to another level, but their hit and miss record at actual tasting, has had the effect of potentially relegating them to a more gimmicky status.

I would however spend some money on a tasting set of the higher end stuff, just to see for myself.

We mustn't dispel the power of marketing and labeling here. Compass Box have excelled at that with the help of Stranger & Stranger (probably the best and most iconic label designers in the whole World ) http://www.strangerandstranger.com/

.......................with the Boutique-y guys giving hard chase recently

I also really like the Darkness range. Beautiful labels wrapped around some amazing Single Malts.

I'm the proud owner of only one bottle...Label designed by Ginger Monkey...they also did the latest Bicycle Cards.

Got one of these too after a friend recommended it and coincidentally it was on special at WB ... struggling with it a bit, by itself it goes down alright, I'd definitely prefer a Lasanta though

problem I had was doing a comparison tasting of sorts across wildly different whiskys that arrived on the same day ... Buffalo Trace, Tamnavulin and Ardbeg 10y ... the Ardbeg and bourbon was an interesting contrast but I got a distinct aniseed / licorice aftertaste on the Tamnavulin

aniseed is a flavour I despise in any drink so that was the end of that :cautious:

so after watching too many whisky tribe videos I made a conscious decision to explore bourbon, something I've always avoided as Jack Daniels entry level was all I knew

per the wisdom of the internet and I think dualmeister's advice I got a bottle of Buffalo Trace, it has gone down rapidly and has me thinking I better acquire another bourbon before it runs out to at least compare to something

now, again per the wisdom of the internet, next seemingly most appreciated, widely available and good value bourbon for me would be Wild Turkey 101, problem is I can't seem to find this supposedly widely available bourbon

checked PnP, Checkers, Takealot, Makro, Bottega, Wild about Whisky and Whisky Brother online, nothing, only WB even lists it and at a price that is more than double that of Buffalo Trace while the two sell for much more similar amounts back in the USA

any idea where to find it locally (hopefully at normal prices even)? I see Luben bought them by the caseload ... starting to suspect that's because it wasn't easy to find

should I give up and just go for regular Wild Turkey?

depends which one, black label on special is great value, blue label at any price is a waste of money

... imo of course
Blue Label (IIRC) won "best whisky" at something the other day. I don't know if you've had it before? It's really not bad, I just think it's pretty bland.

Anyway, from all the cheaper Johnnie Walkers I think the Double Black is the best, but it's a problem for me because it's priced in the sweet spot for entry level single malts, and then I think you can buy much more interesting drams for the same money.

I've had it yes, on 3 separate occasions at vertical Johnny Walker tastings, once just at a bar when overseas colleagues bought a round for everyone while showing off

and then at a friends' whisky get together we cracked open a full bottle of it that was gifted to the host by someone

so the upside is I've never paid a cent for it, but 100% agreed "bland" is exactly what comes to mind, I don't imagine anyone truly wants to pay around R2k for a bottle of "bland" though

I think they won a Masters Medal at The Spirits Business annual Scotch Whisky Masters .

Of course JW has also jumped on the Ghost craze with their Blue Label Ghost and Rare ...where a few drops of Brora or Port Ellen is added to the blend so as to add to the marketing frenzy.

Our market only gets standard wild turkey. Thank your lucky stars we're not the UK they get 40% Buffalo Trace.

Bulleit Bourbon and Knob Creek small batch are in the same ballpark as buffalo trace. Knob Creek small batch isn't as rye spice forward as Bulleit or Buffalo Trace.

I'm going to say something shocking. Unless you hate the banana note (I don't like banana so it's difficult for me to even say this) in Jack Daniels their whisky is very comparable to these Bourbons. JD old no 7 is the most different but JD Rye and Single Barrel are both quite good.

It not easy to find. I bought 20 bottles in 2014 and another 8 bottles in 2016, I have not seen it since then.

The whiskybrother deal is still your best bet on a great offer(https://www.whiskybrother.com/collections/whisky-specials/products/bourbon-restock-promotion). I prefer the Knob Kreek between the 3. If you're looking for a single bottle then the Sazerac Rye would be the next one to try.

Call these guys....if you're willing to pay double that is.

Otherwise I can bring in a few bottles if you're willing to share shipping etc. But you're in JHB ?
