I don't :)

So my Tops has restocked their shelves.

Some new ones they never had before.

Had this for R2k.

And this for R1099.

R795.

And the Peaky Blinders was R249.

No Name no 2 has been sitting there for a while it was just on the top shelf without a price. I asked for a price for it for @BartSimpson back in November and it was R2199. So a bit of a price drop. Arran is good generally but I fell out with them after trying the 18, it was a bit too peppery for me.

Strange that I've not noticed it before. Must wear my glasses next time :)

Ok so old black bottle was essentially a light-medium peated islay blend. I'm a bit confused when you same JW Double Black is too smoky but we'll leave it at that. I'm not sure why you're looking for a replacement in non-scotch and non-peated scotch, it's just not going to happen.

Have you tried:
-Three Ships 5
-Glen Moray Peated
-Bell's Special Reserve
-Laphroaig Select
-Bowmore No 1.
-Highland Park 10

These are all in my honest opinion much better than old black bottle and hit a similar but not quite the same flavour profile.

I would suggest skipping Auchentoshan 12 and Nectar D'or. Glenmorangie 10 isn't something I like (tastes like Polish honey wine ugh) but it's something a lot of people do like. Private Barrel no 68. is actually really good not terribly interesting but very solid Scotch. Bell's special reserve is pretty interesting for a sub R300 bottle and a favourite for me.

Since you liked black bottle you should look at at least finding a bar to try Laphroaig 10/Ardbeg 10 and probably Lagavulin 16.

I'd again as with previous posts try to try these before buying if you can. Some restaurants have a few of these and once you've tried some of them it may be easier to help.
Black bottle didn't have the cigarette/ash taste which I hadn't experienced before until the Double Black.
I have had Three Ships but I am not 100% sure which it was, it was a few years ago. I didn't really enjoy it and gave it away but I'll give it a proper chance, along with the others!
OK I am officially confused and genuinely curious:

What is your definition of peaty or smoky? Or rather....what is the difference to you?

Does an Ardbeg taste peaty or smoky to you?
I have associated peaty with a kind of smoky earthy taste (non-artificial) and smoky with a cigarette/cigar style but I haven't experienced many whiskies classified as peaty and (or?) smoky other than Laphroiag (I think it was the 10) and Double Black/Double Black and Teacher's Highland Cream. This association is probably as much from watching Ralfy/whisky.com as from my limited experience though and I wouldn't trust it.
When I get a chance to go past the Whisky Brother bar I am planning to give at least Ardbeg a taste.

Distilled another weak wash yesterday. Got around 11l of stripping run spirit now at home at around 65% ABV. Going to throw this through the still this weekend and hopefully get a decent yield so I can dump it on my Kentucky bourbon barrel wood chips. I gave some of my first batch whisky to people on here and, well, it didn't go too well. After stepping back and looking at the whisky objectively, I realized it was pretty ****, so I'm doing it right this time around. Charcoal finishing, etc.

Got pics of your setup?

Uuuh, not really. I converted an old pressure cooker into a still. Will have to take pics of it running at some time, when I've got the garage cleaned up a bit... :D

EDIT: I'm actually considering selling my still right now. I want to go bigger. I do too many runs at any given time to be able to work with the 10l setup anymore.

What's the Boplaas like? Looking forward to giving it a wing when back in SA in May.

Then there's the 8-year-aged "super premium" single-cask grain whisky at a kilorand per bottle:
8yr-whiskey.jpg

Website blurb said:
"The Boplaas Family Distillery has launched a super-premium, single-cask grain whisky that was aged for eight years in port and bourbon barrels. Just 300 bottles of this fine spirit have been produced. Each bottle is numbered and bears the signature of 6thgeneration distiller Daniel Nel.

The Boplaas 8 Year Old Single Cask Grain Whisky is the colour of dark mahogany and resembles an old Cognac. Its palate is full-bodied, showing matured oak, raisin and tawny port with hints of vanilla and caramel. The whisky is rich and intense with a lingering finish of dried fruits and warm winter spices.

It was distilled from South African yellow maize and then spent five years in second and third-fill bourbon barrels, followed by three years in barrels that formerly held Boplaas Cape Tawny Reserve Port. Each sojourn imparted unique character to the spirit, rounding it off to perfection.

The whisky was then bottled at cask strength of 58% alcohol and in its most natural form – unfiltered and unfined."

I see it's just won a Top Spirit award from Fred Heart:
