I cracked open the 15YO Bain's last night. It's a definite improvement over the regular release and sits comfortably at that price (R999). R1700 for an 18YO grain is fine, I guess, but I'm just not sure if the quality is there for such a price hike over just a few more years. I much prefer Invergordon as a grain whisky and, for a 1.5k over that price, I could get a 43 year old cask strength bottling.

As a grain whisky Bain's is decent but not great (is this heresy?). I'm far from a malt snob but I find the Three Ships releases a significant step up in depth of taste and would consider buying at that price for a Three Ships 21YO.

I'm glad that JSD don't chill-filter these releases but dropping them at the bare minimum ABV to avoid clouding (46.8%) just doesn't sit right with me. At that price, on that age, I want something with more bite - especially considering this is most presumably geared toward the whisky enthusiast. Surely they aren't expecting the average joe to be buying these and mixing it with Coke? The 15YO is 52.5% and the 18YO were specifically bottled at 50.5%, so why can't we have a little more here?

I guess I'm not really the target customer and I assume this price is "reasonable" for those who do hold Bain's to such a high standard. For me, I just don't see it.

Anyway, that's longer than I wanted to type. Let me get back to overspending on some overrated, mediocre sherried whisky.

Is buying expensive whisky Tax deductible ?

My ex-boss would put his private alcohol purchases down as "necessary team building" work expenses.

Is this you that didn't like the 21(26) year old much?

Ranked:
15 Revival

2008 PX Puncheon (would be an untouchable sherry beast at 16 years I reckon)

18 Allardice

21 Parliament

12 Original

Yessir, that's me! Thought you were Gauteng way, not here in sunny Dirtbin. :p

Ouch. Don't think I will be adding this one after all

Yeah no, I also agree with your estimates, I was expecting R2500 for the rarer sherry casks used. I was also hoping the Three Ships 21 would come in at around R2500~. Now I'm expecting it to be R3500. R3000 for an aged grain is a difficult sell, I think they will have problems moving this one.

I haven't bought any Bains 18, I will probably eventually add another Bains 15, it's great stuff and easily competes with the 18s.

I remember them saying that the 21yo TSW would be be priced at an "affordable" price. It's almost October already. So a R3000 Bain's releases, a potential R3000 TWS release, the new 10yo 2008 vintage (last vintage release) and another Masters release soon all within 3 months is a bit heavy on the pocket.

I'm sure that Covid-19 has delayed some of the releases, but still.

4000 bottles at R3K each (R12 million) .... they not going to fly off the shelves. Maybe put some money aside for the next 6 months and get one then

That shop is madness with some of their prices. You can still get it in Hong Kong for around 100K.

The best part is that when LMdW released it they were only asking around €300/bottle. $GME has nothing on whisky prices.

Bleak I missed it, had to settle for the standard one thats still on special. I really enjoyed the last bottle I had of it but very keen to try the High Voltage, will have to wait for another special

I am happy to share a sample of High Voltage if you want to try it?

Land Cask is actually quite drinkable, not sure I'll ever buy another bottle, though, unless seriously marked down.

Give the sea cask a wide berth, terrible stuff.

Good mate of mine won a ballot allocation and bought a bottle for GBP 18 000

He will probably flip it for close to GBP 22 000

I do not have the cash flow or balls for something like that...
