White Girls Only

Wonder how the numerous black-only (in essence) scholarships and bursaries that are given out in the hundreds each year aren't seen as "racist"? Obviously companies are not as explicit as this, but when you see the words "previously disadvantaged" you know your chance as a white person is very slim indeed. Companies have also made the requirements to get most scholarships pathetically low - 60% or 70% (which is really, really easy in the new matric) so as to choose the 'correct' colour.

The Oprah school example is poor one because it is for kids who would otherwise not be able to afford such opportunities and in the main they happen to be majority black. It's too bad that amnesia discussed here a while ago is still very much alive & well among our white countrymen.

Hell, I wouldn't be able to afford such "opportunities". The Oprah school is one hell of a luxury IMO.
 
Oprah Winfrey stated that she founded the Leadership Academy to provide educational and leadership opportunities for academically gifted girls from impoverished backgrounds in South Africa who exhibited leadership qualities for making a difference in the world.

Okay, then I was under the wrong impression. Fact remains there are a lot of bursaries out there for "blacks only".

What makes this any different?

Surely a person can will his money to whomever he pleases.
 
I love Oprah Winfrey's clear extravagance - I'm all these beauty parlours are helping to educate the future leaders of tomorrow ... :rolleyes:

Winfrey received much criticism surrounding the "extravagance" of the school, with mention, among other things, about the need for high thread-count sheets for the dormitory beds, a beauty salon, two theaters (one indoor, one outdoor) and a yoga classroom to educate girls in an impoverished region of South Africa.

Because of Apartheid ? Are you stupid or something ?

FYI I would much rather they give out scholarships to black kids by the truckload then try and force these policies on the workforce without any skills.
 
What happened to the policy of giving out scholarships to people on merit? Or is that politically-incorrect for most South Africans?

Obviously there should be some attempt to re-address the past, but white people who do well at school should also be recognised. What is happening most likely is a non-white person with 70% is getting the scholarship instead of a white person who gets 80%. I don't think that is very fair at all.

Just to point out there are lots of very poor white people that also live in shacks. This could give them the opportunity to finally get an education. Also how many white kids today would love to attend university, but due to them being overlooked with bursaries this is impossible.

Maybe you should read the Sunday Times article in the OP.
People are still banging on about how it should be ok to start a white girl only school because "black only" stuff like the Oprah academy exist. Obviously the Oprah academy is not meant for black only but the OP misguidedly thinks so.

What about organizations like the black lawyers association, the black journalist forum, the native club, black education trust ?
