White Smoke from PC

Just phoned Takealot and they said someone would call and let me know if I need to send in both or just the PSU. They said it would go for testing at their warehouse?

They will probably pick up on the 115/230 switch thing so doubt I would get a refund :( could they replace it?

Thanks to all who have helped :) really appreciate it!

Why would they pickup on the voltage issue?
It will most likely blow a capacitor, they will see blown capacitors and replace it.

Warranties are there for a reason.
It was an honest mistake.
Just set it to the correct voltage and send it back to Takealot.
Takealot replaced one of my psu units previously without an issue, they even upgraded the model at no extra charge.

Well the way the 'testing center' was described I thought it was a really high tech place :D that could detect things like that.

It indeed was, a very stupid one albeit I should have known, and one I am sure I will not make again. Will be checking everything 3 times over from now :D

Ahh ok thanks :) that was generous of then :D just hope I can get it sorted out soon...been without a PC for over a week now.

It has the numbers 115 on it. What does 115 mean?

It means you're fooked. Domestic power supplies in SA are 220-240V.

Unfortunately the returns process will take a while, probably a week at least.

If Kalahari still have their voucher thing going you could probably get a thermaltake for cheap:
R317

RMA gonna take a while and I don't think they will cover negligence even if accidental.

R320 isnt too bad, will check it out thanks for that :) yeah I don't have my hopes that high for the RMA thing.

:( Yup I'm fooked. Ahh ok a week isn't too bad. Thanks

You'd be surprised.
I don't even think my PSU was faulty, but to be sure I sent it in and they replaced it with a newer model.

Either way, how are they going to know it was negligence?
PPl return things everyday.

In future power up a new psu witout anything connected just to test first.

Ahhh dammit :( so what are my chances of getting it replaced by retailer as I did not know about this? Probably unlikely they would.

Will test out other components later to see if they work.

They will probably be difficult about it.

But I would argue...

1. Why was it set to 110/115 by default.

2. Why are they selling a product for the US market in South Africa.

Takealot have a same day out of the box swop out process.

I would simply do that.

They send you the same product with the courier and then take the old one back.

Nah, it was white smoke so it was simply "giving up the ghost" :)
Anytime the voltage selector is set to 115 instead of 230 it will give up the ghost!
If you could capture the ghost and every molecule that left the PSU then maybe it will work. ;)

Sounds like a pretty clear case of demon possession to me.

Ahh dam should have had some holy water ready :D

I spoke to the callcenter person and asked what can I do they said they will call me and arrange for it to be picked up and sent for testing. Is it possible now to ask for that option instead?

I'm a bit worried to switch it on, as it spat out oil (few small drops on MB and some on side casing and was dripping from PSU)
This is you must take care immediately. Remove drops ASAP, it can damage motherboard. Dry it out with toilet paper, then apply cotton buds soaked with 90% alcohol to remove residuals.

Thanks for this. Where can I get 90% alcohol to remove residual?

Why mention anything about the voltage selector?
This PSU simply turned on with a puff of smoke.
it must go back.

Simple.

Actually you should tell them everything. Tell them that PSU came with wrong voltage switch, but you didn't notice that. If you tell them, they will check all units fom the same batch, they need your help.

Um, no.

In farmacy. At Dischem request specificaly 90%, otherwise you receive about 50-60%.
If you can't get it, use methylated spirit to do quick job, better than nothing.
