With all the fuss and hype on Voip this last 6 months, is there actually a sa based voip service?

IS says it has, but it's lying, same with MWeb. They just want the word to appear on their site. www.voip.co.za is also useless. Just cashing in on banned ads looks like.

If I knew nobody was going to have a serivce ready by Feb I would've developed something.

What I need is a roaming number. A local SA number that ppl can call and I can answer it on a softphone on my PC.

I have a Norwigian account, but the quality is horriffic, needing to travel half way around the world.

Does anybody out there know of a SA voip service provider?

Hi Taqyon

I have spoken to IS about their VOIP offerings and they do indeed have these services. Their main target market is business users and the service is currently only offered over diginet connections. The have also obtained the relevant certifications to ensure that their network infrastructure is suitable to carry voice (guaranteed quality etc. I assume…think it is called AVID compliancy). For more info about this issue you can contact Garth from IS: (011) 575 3703

I might sound somewhat too positive regarding IS, but I can inform you that it is always a pleasure to contact them! The person you want to speak to is usually available, they are knowledgeable and are willing to share technical information with us. This can not be said about some other players!

Regards,

RPM

Thanks RPM. Are you referring to the voip they provide large coporates such as Sanlam, Standard Bank etc? I've been involved with the development of it about 2 years ago, but that was not officially legal and not voip complient as such. Either way, I have a small business and they did not reply to my information request form, so I suppose it's still only for larger customers.

Thanks for the info.
