Who has the same problem as this with local accounts?

Assuming you're a South African community and you're not moving warez, the price of local hosting is usually affordable enough.

Try hosting a game server locally or try distributing something you created which is several MB in size and you have several thousand users.
Try find me 50 locally hosted podcasts sites ...

Let me give you a real scenario :
I'm busy creating some photographic scenery for a flight simulator which I want to distribute free of charge.
The file will be about 2GiB in size when I finish next month and I expect there could be about 500 people who would like to download it in the short term. That's 1 TiB in a couple of weeks. How much will it cost me to host it locally?

Hosting locally seems to be limited to having a few pretty HTML/PHP/whatever pages with zero multimedia content.

Equinox with all respect to you, I know where you are coming from, and technically it should be done locally, but I must say I agree with the general consensus of the forum.

With my limited experience in hosting of websites and content it would in most circumstances be better to host overseas even if it’s for local customers.

http://www.microsoft.co.za takes you to http://www.microsoft.com/southafrica (not best example, but its one)

The best situation, not for the local only customers, but for a fair balance of price versus performance is to do what MyADSL does, host locally but downloads are hosted on an international server like mypodcast.co.za (I think) or mydrive.co.za

The majority of websites are "pretty HTML" with zero/little multimedia. As such, the "majority" of websites are better to host where your client base is.

Now, I dont want to sound stereotypical, but the MyADSL community might be made up of the "type" of user who is likely to move 40GBs of data a month through a website and for those purposes, yes, hosting should be done overseas, but for things like hosting NZBs and SA community forums the price of 5-8GBs of local bandwidth really isn't an excuse for taking the cheap overseas option. I dunno, thats my take on it.

This is just a discussion...no-one is pointing fingers at anyone. Its nice to have a fairly decent discussion in these forums as opposed to the usual "we hate telkom"

Cheap doesn't mean that its better hosting. Sure...its better for your pocket. But if your users are all hosted in SA, its not best for them.

I never said it was cheap - if I had to label it I'd have used the term inexpensive. I dont do 'cheap' any longer - not since I stopped hosting locally.

Granted - my target is generally global which, while it includes a local audience, precludes it being hosted locally.

Telkom 2gig account, nice cuz of soft capping
Openweb 30gig local account nice for local downloads..

Route sentry
Raspppoe
