So SADV recently did our complex for ftth. Was just wondering, do they install the ONT devices or does the isp once we sign up?

SADV will install but via the ISP that you choose. If you choose SADV as your ISP they would install the ONT and supply the router.

If you choose another ISP then SADV will come and install the line and ONT and then the ISP will install or courier the router to you.

So it'll only be installed once you actually order fibre from an ISP?

And if you move leave the ONT, and cancel/migrate your service to the new place. Its the polite thing to do

I'm actually asking on behalf of the residents at the complex. I don't stay there myself. But I'll pass on the message.

As far as I'm aware you have to leave that ONT behind as it does not belong to you. Wonder what happens to people that does take it?

The ONT never belongs to the client, it still belongs to the service provider.

And if people cancel when leaving it leaves the line open for the next person. That saves the next people the nearly 2k installation fees, and then they only pay the activation fees.

And it would be nice to you if someone did it that way, so that's why I said it would be polite...

I know Bitco Home Fibre starts from under R600/month on SADV.
Their services are unshaped and unthrottled, obviously limited to the speed of the package selected.

I can offer more info should it be required.

That's what I said...
It would be difficult and costly for the cable provider to trace such persons, and as such the next person will pay the FULL imstallation and setup costs again.
Same will happen if the persons leaving damages the unit.
And if you don't cancel with your ISP they will not only hound you for the money, they will also hold the ont/line to ransom, meaning either the next person pays what you owe or they pay for a FULL install again so the cable providers can give them a clean line.

Fibre is not the same as ADSL.

Actually, it's pointless taking the ONT with you when you move, first off, it doesn't belong to you, so there's that, and second, you can't do anything with it.

Saw someone advertise on facebook classifieds a router and a Telkom "fibre router" When I looked at the pictures I saw it was an Openserve ONT. When I told the seller he should not sell it and rather leave it at the property that is was installed at because it's not his to take as it belongs to Openserve and that the ONT is completely locked that it is basically useless as Openserve won't install to who ever buys it they had me removed from the group.......

I only once removed the ONT an that was with Aeonova 360 as they use the Huawei ONT as a router and ONT. So you have the wifi enabled on it and you have very limited fuctions on it. Their network is also run with DHCP as far as I know and after I moved I took it with me as it's linked to my account which they did not want to cancel so did not want to be liable when the next tenant uses and I have to pay. Still waiting 1 year later for them to collect the ONT. Mailed them 20 times+

What Pinball Wizard said.

And both you, at your new place, and the new people at your old place will have to pay the full installation fees.

Think of it as paying it forward. As fibre one day becomes a more common occurance you will find you start moving into places with the fibre infrastructure in place already.

When we moved in Sept 2018 there was existing fibre already.

The ONT is actually a "fixture", like your TV antenna/Satellite dish, Pool cleaner, Stove (in Gauteng at least), light fittings, etc., which you leave behind when you sell/move.

So does that ONT belong to you then or will you have to pass it onto the person you sell your place to?

And what happens if you rent out your place with that ONT, the tenant breaks it, loses it or takes it with him/her?

Pay installation again or just the cost of the ONT box?

Oh I see. What happens if it breaks or lighting strikes it while in your "contractual period"?

Is the infrastructure provider always there to assist cos of the rental included in ISP subscription?
