I have just modded mine with various mods including Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and it's looking pretty good.

I recently played the Nehrim total conversion. Good fun.

I made the mistake(?) of completing the main story after about 120hrs of game time. I stopped playing after that.

Even if the main story only contributes a fraction of my game time, everything just feels pointless after it. This is my main problem(?) with sandbox games, I just don't have any incentive to continue playing even if there are still side-quests and whatnot to complete.

That's very true. I found that with Fallout: NV as well.

Even if doing tons of side-quests make you grossly too powerful at the end of the main story (Final Fantasy is a very good example here) there's still some place, albeit redundant, to use the gains from them.

Maybe these types of games should just not have a proper ending? :P

Wow, Still have the original - never finished it.
So BUSY MMO'ing with LOTRO to play Oblivion...Was an amazing game - back in the day.

Played Morrowind recently again since its my personal favorite of the elder scrolls games. Modded properly it looks an plays great even now. Oblivion was a game i played for awhile an then just shelved tbh.
Probably since I didn't mod it.

I got Oblivion 4 GOTY deluxe edition on the recent steam sale, never played any of the previous games before this,can/will these mods work on steam game, and if yes are they easy to install/apply?

I'm playing Morrowind (stock) right now. My only problem is having made a pure nordic fighter, I'm struggling to meet requirements for advancements in various factions. Also, having just recently finished Oblivion I am STRUGGLING with no fast travel D: If I didn't have the boots of blinding speed I would've quit ages ago haha.

Morrowind is heaps better than Oblivion in my opinion. My morrowind has about 50+ mods on it.

Even stock, the thing that really puts Morrowind ahead for me is the feeling of diversity. All the places in Oblivion feels samey compared to Morrowind.

I havent finished Oblivion yet - I play it when I'm bored (usually after i've finished another game).
I've been playing it less and less though. Guess I should try out the mods...

Very true. Oblivion all the cities are so similar and the trees are all the same whereas morrowind has amazing mushroom landscapes and cool looking cities that float!

It seems with every Elder scrolls game the previous one was better

I'm actually keen to get back into Oblivion - played through the main quest but I was too impatient and left out a lot of the side quests. Just got to try and find my copy now :p

I found that smart use of mark and recall really takes alot of the monotony out of not having fast travel. dosent stop having to create training spells an walking around casting all the bloody time just to be able to use it tho.

one mod I'd definitely recommend that doesn't directly affect gameplay is Morrowind Graphics extender

Provides Directx 9.0 features. Looks much better and maxes out drawing distance.
