Who still watches in SD?

If it's just a general series and not a favourite I will get HDTV rips at 350mb or 175 (20mins). That quality is still excellent.
Proper HD rips waste too much HD space. Seriously what would a season of 22 episodes (40 mins) take up?
 
SD in MKV format (+/- 150MB/episode/40min) and the quality is more than good enough.
I download 8 episodes at a time and while watching them over 1-2 days, the next 8 are downloading.
Once the first 8 are watched, they get deleted immediately .... so why must I download in HD if i'm never gonna watch it again ... there is way too much out there to watch a series more than once. :whistle:
Some movies & especially music videos I try and get in HD cause they get used over & over.
 
HD for movies, and spectacle TV shows, usually SciFi, and SD for talking head stuff.
Hawaii 50 in HD looks like a picture postcard.
 
all my serieses and movies are on HD , SD is just too crappy and blurred, although that keeps me buying new hdd's every 3 months i just don't mind, the eye candy and sound is worth it.

Everything in HD, unless its not available in HD for download.

Download time doesn't matter, because Sickbeard grabs the episodes while I am sleeping, when I wake up the stuff is already done and ready for watching on XBMC. If something airs on Friday in the US, I have it Saturday morning, I don't see how anyone can get it earlier, so download time on HD episodes really isn't an excuse for me at least.

The movies are downloaded by Couchpotato, so that I don't have to sit 10min a day every to see if a movie I am looking for has been released in HD, instead Couchpotato does that work for me, nowadays I am surprised to see I have new movies to watch. I will admit though, even though I have a 1080p full hd TV, I prefer the 720p movies, but thats because I still need to fix GPU acceleration for HD movies on my HTPC.

Still SD for these reasons:
  1. Don't have a HDTV.
  2. Don't have much storage.
  3. Doesn't stream so lekker to the media players (100Mbit switch).
 
Situational...

I don't see the point of going the extra mile to watch the average series or romantic comedy in HD.
If I know the movie is gonna be eye bleedingly beautiful, or I am very passionate about it (I'm looking at you, Blade Runner), then I'll go for HD.

Thats odd i stream my 1080p movies from my pc to my samsung tv and all that through a 100mb switch. what player are you using ?

Planet Digital Media Center and Xtreamer Pro.

I think the bigger issue is the amount of traffic going through the switch since i'm also running a wug highsite.
 
I think it all depends on what size your screen is, and how far you sit from it...

On my old 74cm CRT, SD was perfectly fine... now on a 46" LCD, HD is soooo much nicer!

Didn't I also learn about Sickbeard from you? Its downloaded over 250GB since then :(

Now I've added CouchPotato to the list :p

You must have a ****ty network - I stream 40GB Bluray rips across my network, through four switches along the way and it plays fine, even does fast forwarding and rewinding perfectly.

Could be, and yes those 2 combined with XBMC makes for a killer HTPC :)

I'll say this, I think 720p can stream fine on a 100mbit network, heck I have streamed 720p over a 55mbit wireless access point fine, 1080p however is a completely different story, and lucky for me my home network doesn't have too many devices on it, so a 5 1gbit-port RB750 Mikrotik works fine (also acts as a router).
 
Until 10tb drives are commonplace and we have 25Mbit connections, I will still get series in SD. Drives can get pricey, especially because I need a backup of each. I do get my movies in HD though.
 
I'm more concerned about the quality content of the movie than whether it's in SD or HD. A polished turd is still a turd :D

for sure. I remember my friend giving me a Blu Ray rip of 'Witch Mountain' or whatever that movie with The Rock is. I watched it and got bored and after the movie thought to myself 'why the fck would someone download a 8 GB rip of that movie?' Like seriously. Someone must have had nothing else to download :eek:

And how many hard drives are you guys stocking up on? Check a 720p episode of How I Met Your Mother = 558.17 MiB. that x 24 episodes = just over 13 gigs for one season!
That is just a 20 minute episode. How about full hd rips that are 10 gb's? Woweee I struggle with hard drive space already. I would go nuts if I switched to HD only.

But i guess some movies only deserve Full HD like Transformers,Avatar etc.
