Who uses Linux?

If you can use those commands, the overseas market does.
I'm going to learn this one of by heart then. Are there many such commands to learn? And the internet and email makes it possible to work from anywhere in the world. That's the beauty of it. On the other hand, if you fix PC's and install Linux for a living, email won't be of any use will it? ;)

Intelligence is a negative factor for high paid jobs in ZA tho - thats why most of us struggle.
Excuses excuses. Start your own company and stuff up the people who do that to you.:D

henry, please do yourself a big favour, and don't try to learn the command that Kasyx posted. The worst that could happen is that you'll install gentoo...

Seriously, if you're just starting out with linux, you will never need to look at the command-line.

Is this guy serious?

You are kidding arent you ?Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?
That sounds preposterous to me.

This guy is not even drinking the cool aid - he's sniffing the powder!

I dunno, I've remotely installed Linux on a few servers in the DRC - of course you have to get someone physically there to boot into the liveCD and start the ssh daemon :D

OK it seems like Linux is for nerds after all, but sheez, why do we need so many posts to realize that? OK so here's the story: My XP Pro copy is a pirate cos Microsoft said so and now it's got this nagging screen.

Now I either have to downgrade back to Win 98 of which I have a legal copy or go to Linux. It's the cheaper option, but if I'll get technical problems with it, I'll settle for Win 98 no problem.

Does anyone know of a working local mirror for the latest release? None that i have tried work at all...:(

D'oh.

Try this one for the cds
http://ubuntu.mirror.ac.za/ubuntu-release/7.10/

If the page has taken that ling to load, I suspect the problem may lie with your connection rather than the mirror. :p

Ahh, that is more like it :) Superfast as well.

What is with the DVD releases? Why are they so big? Excuse the noob questions but I am limited to local-only right now and there is not a lot of info on local only sites. Have already read the threads on here about Linux....

Keen to get away from M$ if i can.

Anyone here using Linux? I downloaded Ubuntu and wrote it to a CD. Then I realized that it is an .iso file and not an exe like I'm used to. How do I install the darn thing or can only nerds do that?

Double clicking on it does nothing. It prompts you to search for an app that opens it. Why is it so difficult?
u can order a free CD from the following link: https://shipit.ubuntu.com/login

They are generally put on DVDs these days so they can include more packages. I remember back in the day before the wide-spread use of DVDs having around 9 SuSE CDs, the first one for the initial install, the others for additional packages.
