Internet Africa were my first ISP and DOS text browsing. How things have changed :p
 
I can remember struggling to access a NIS terminal service via a 2400 dialup. Because MNP5 still had to roll around, some characters would end up being garbage or you'll end up typing random stuff thanks to Telkom's awesome line quality. One could telnet, ftp, gopher and usenet through there, but no way of getting any of that back to your PC. Was basically just an information retrieval service for dialup users - and recall that it was free as well. Amazing how you could look up stuff from anywhere in the world!

Compustat would have started with ISP services around the same time, I think - and the rest is literally history...

(Wonder how many people still remember things like Binkleyterm, FrontDoor, RemoteAccess, Zone Mail Hour, 5:7102/xyz and the likes <sniff>)
 
Ah hah this brings back memories. I was but a lad, approximately 13 years of age, when my bestest friend got hold of UUNET iAfrica :)

The good ol days, when Netscam Never get there (Netscape Navigator) was the browser of choice! Unlimited pr0nz but also taking about 5 minutes to get a picture lol.

Never looked back, the internet is a wonderful thing :)

Makes me wonder what the cringe factors will be when we look back at current websites in 15 to 20 years.
 
My first internet experience was at my moms work, Telkom Internet was the main man back then.
 
I remember the codes on the back of Iafrica's boxes that gave you a free trial. I returned many times to the local computer stores to write the numbers down for yet another trial (and guessed a few too). That was round about '97.

Back in 1995 I remember TICSA & Aztec (had to dialup from George to Cape Town
or PE - no POP in George, then CIS had a local POP in George, then
Greg & Anthony opened up a PIX POP in George.

Enjoyed my SLIP connection and then the expensive Compuserve (R300/month)
via CSIR and who can forget the banking via Beltel
 
I remember when ABSA internet started the free internet model.
Are they still existing, anyone know ?
 
I remember TICSA - became IAfrica didn't it?... I worked at GIA when they had 20 Microcom Deskport Fast+ modems (early '95) and a 64k line into IS. I was there when they switched on the 256k line direct into the UK (BTNet if I remember right) - omf that was incredible...
I had a .ac.za email address in 1993 (@cs.wits.ac.za) and .co.za in early 94 (Keiths Place BBS which used Digitec as an internet mail gateway)...
 
I remember when I was a kid my father use to use online banking via beltel/cybertrade, it came with free intranet (i think)
