Who won the Xbox vs PS2 battle?

Its quite ironic that the PS2 is still selling and the PS3 has been out for a year now. :-P

Lots of young kids/parents taking up the benefit of price reduction. PS2 can be got for good price deals which is affordable only now to millions we never had the opportunity to own, until now.

Wow damned if I do damned if I dont ;)

As far as your storae comment, sure with some games you would probably only have to change the game every few hours, but what about games like UT3 where the xbox content has already been cut due to size of the disk. What happens when you play multiplayer online. You enter a random online game, suddenly everyone gets a pop up "Please be patient while Doobiwan changes to disk 8 to retrieve the correct map".

Nope. Think that one through a bit. Who would you be playing with? I can see you haven't played Halo . . ;)

I won't even try argue the point that most games end up centering around only a few maps De_dust, Karkand etc etc

Easy answer: if there are too many MP maps for one disc you split discs by playlist. That would be a "matchmaking category", for the Halo noobs...

And what if de_dust is on one disk and karkand is on another?
Just admit I have a point!

You have a concern, I'm offering you a very simple solution, so you're not getting any points :p

Firstly, if player A hosts a game on Map X, in order for player B to play on said map he has to stick the same disc in as Player A. If they're playing off the same disc - they'll have the same map set, Eureka, that's amazing!

Similarly even for server based, I take it you aren't familiar with "playlists"? You basically chose a game type, not a specific map. So all the maps on a disc will be associated with a particular game type. For example, if I chose "Team Deathmatch" I put in the TDM disc, the server knows it's the TDM playlist and only offers maps on that disc.

Even if you want to change playlist you have to quit to the lobby anyway, so it's a great time to get up, grab a drink, go to the loo and change disc.

You guys are soooo very funny for your ideas of swapping discs for different maps.

Most xboxes have something called a hard drive. It can be used to store downloaded maps.
No disc changing necessary. Cool Hey?

:)

Well there's no set limit, but the Gears of war map Pack was about 400mb(?) for 4 maps which were all gorgeous, so say about 100Mb per map. (Fair comparison as the issue was raised about Unreal Tournament which is the same engine)

Some folks like the Killzone team are claiming 2Gb of level data, but frankly that's nothing but bad programming, designed to make Blu-ray look good. CoD4, which is superior in most ways shipped the game engine, 3 maps and debug code in 1Gb for the beta.

Doobiwan it would seem that with every passing day you become increasingly dissillusional.
Firstly you still dont get what I am saying. I want to be able to join any random game while I am playing online. What if the server chooses a map that isnt on your disk? Ok so you say you just play with what is essentially a filter, so that you will only play with the maps on your disk. Well I would rather be able to play any map at any point thanks. You change the disk if you want, I wont have to. As for the hard drive that point is moot as not all xbox's have them and so it cant be set as a standard!

Dude are you working on the killzone developer team? How else would you know this? Your statement is pure fanboism. Secondly saying at this point the COD4 is better than killzone is also pure fanboy crud spewing from your mouth, you have never played killzone2 and so there is no way you can make this statement. From what I have seen IMO Killzones2 looks way better than COD4, and thats coming from someone who is looking forward to the graphically superior version of COD4!

Um... have you ever played Halo 3 online? It really helps you to understand what online gaming should be...

You end up playing only half the maps (Social Slayer for maps of less than 10 ppl, Big Team for 12-16 players, Doubles for 2-4 player maps, etc, etc, etc); you don't need all the maps all the time.

Furthermore, because of the high level of coding standards at Bungie, the net code is immensely fast and the maps small. I agree with Doobiwan, what kind of programmer allows maps to reach that size: poor coding, poor engine = poor speed.

Who won? IMO the consumer. Two companies vying for attention is never a bad thing.

Your idealised "random gaming" is purely hypothetical, illogical, and as I said, is not how most people play. All the big games, Counterstrike, Battlefield, Quake, Unreal tournament, Halo etc etc end up with map rotations of of a half dozen or so favourites. People also stick with their preferred game types for particular sessions because it's confusing and blows your groove.

And no a playlist is not a filter. It's a matter of similar game types. Like objective based play or oh I give up you'll never get it.

On 2Gb of level data:
1. Uncompressed PCM audio is a complete waste of space for games it's like sticking CD quality audio (or even RAW 24/96) on the disc - Forget the technical bull whether there's actually a perceivable difference - in an active "warzone" there's too much going on to tell, let alone care.

2. shared assets. nuff said.

3. On graphical assets, they could be storing the stuff as uncompressed bmp and would have to stream it to memory. But lets forget the technical argument - the things poor little 256Mb of video RAM in the first place - lets look at the video's.

KZ2 environments suck in comparison. They're flat and bland. If KZ2 shows any advantage it's purely in the facial modelling. In every other respect CoD4 outdoes Killzone 2, regardless of platform. I can speak from personal experience that CoD4 is as good as the video's and that's just in multiplayer. Killzone...well we all know Sony's reputation for prerelease footage.

As I said, don't take my word for it the video's are right there. I'd recommend removing the Rose tinted glasses, but I have come to accept the fact that they've been riveted to your forehead ;)

Not bad programming as they must duplicate textures on the disc for every player level it is used since the Blu-ray drive is so much slower than a DVD or HDD.

When loading a level you want to keep the laser in the same place reading sequencially than trashing across the disc reading in random textures for another location.

So the 2GB per level is the truth but spinning things a bit.
