Ok ppl seeing i cant make a poll i will have to see replys

Who here would pay for servers that are fast, with out lag and can host a game with the max amount of possible players.
EG. Battlefield 2 on SAIX is 48 players. When it is a 64 player game.
If so would pay for servers that ensure you dont get ppl playing with high pings and that dont disconnect for no reason what so ever.
IF so what would u want from something like this and what price you be willing to pay?

well i think your problem would be

why pay when we could play on sgs for free
and dont forget that bf 2 has an ingame bug which makes 64 player no possible without lag no matter what the setup and from what ive heard sgs have very fast servers

i agree with killadoob, why pay when you can get it for free?
if i liked the way it was run and i had dsl i wouldnt mind paying a small fee for a good server but its just a extra fee that is uneeded tho

sorry but i WOULD pay just to avoid :

- VOIP breaks on the SGS servers quite a lot
- when a server on SGS crashes you cant complain since its free
- TK complaints fall on deaf ears on SGS most of the time
- map rotation makes me laugh at times

For all that i wouldnt mind paying R45 per month, thats R1.50 per DAY. Not much to be honest, but then you become a paying customer who has a right to be heard when something isnt right.

My 2 cents.

I'd pay if they offered something out of the ordinary. But in all honesty the Games Importers should see to it that there are decent local servers to play on.

there is no way someone could afford to offer bf 2 for 45 rand way to little

imagine how much bandwidth it would consume?

well 48x45= R2160

plus the same server doesnt really ONLY have to run ONE BF2 server so if you have 2x48 people servers its over R4k per month... quite affordable if i might say.

Do you have ANY idea of the bandwidth requirements? Do some math.

I have a Quake3 server running on one of my overseas hosted servers; this alone consumes about 5Gbytes or more a day. Gamers with decent hardware and a good net connection can easily chew up 60Mbytes an hour.

I do not think R4K will get you very far, not in this country anyway and certainly not with ADSL, even the 1Mbit ADSL can only upload at 300 or so Kbits which does not give much capacity per user if you hope to have 48 of them.

no I have NO IDEA how much bandwidth costs. the whole thread was on the idea of PAYING to host servers.

I said i would gladly pay for one and thats it. fill me up with the math Einstein and then show me how much i would pay then, pretty please? ;)

Well, as I mentioned I have a 32 player Q3 server that is scoffing 5G a day, when it's busy each user is gobbling about 30-60Mbytes an hour. It is not busy all the time, but you have to always cater for the busiest times when shopping for connection speeds.

The math to figure out what you need is easy. +-40Mbytes per hour per user. So in order to give acceptable speed to all the clients you need about 11Kbytes a second for each user ( 88 kbits ). So for 48 users you need a 4Mbit or faster connection. So this is definitely not something you are going to be hosting at home with ADSL.

Ok so now you know what you need. Now you need to find someone to give it to you locally, since you can't expect good speeds from an international hosted server unless your target audience is international. Most local (smaller) ISPs only have a 2Mbit diginet line to their upstream provider, so they won't be much good. You will need to look at the bigger ones that have decent upstream capacities and good peering speeds.

Expect to pay anything from R60 to R90 per Gig of traffic your server uses, these are actually quite optimistic prices and depending on which host you use it could very well be considerably higher. Let's assume you decide to use Hetzner, which charge R90 per gig. I will assume your 48 player server will use more capacity than my 32 player server, lets assume your server will do about 7.5G a day ( it's not going to be busy 100% of the time ). This means you would be paying R675 just for bandwidth each day. Each month +- R20250.

As you can se SA is not the place to host game servers....

and since BF2 is a bandwidth hog i think Kimosabe should know more about this..

thanks for the info pookfuzz... ;)

BF2 can use up to 70mb an hour if you're really chatty on VOIP.
On average though, it's about 55mb or so.

I think there was a thread about this on SGS - (Or was it here?)

Well guys from the info i have gathered it costs over r100000 to run really fast servers with promised bandwith, thus it wont lag and give crap.
But i am still looking into it.
If you guys would like something like this, that would give u a much better service than SGS.
If i where to start this i would need over a 1000 ppl to sign up at the point of creation.
Also It wont just be Battlefield 2.
It would be CS:source, Call of Duty, joint operations, and many more.
Is there any other games that you would like to see hosted.
I have been thinking about what other services we could offer.
I was thinking about a Cap saver. which will help you save your cap, but us downloading all the drivers, patches, mods, and all that other stuff we waste our caps on.
Feed back plz!

just wish sgs would sort server 1's lag out!

yesterday i pulled 300MB on BF2, thats 1/10 my cap blady ridiculous

OK guys i need some feed back here, who would pay for servers or not, get all our clan mate, fellow gamers and friends to give me an answer. Cos i would like to find out who would be interested.

if 300MB is 1/10th of your cap, then you should STOP USING HELLKOM AS YOUR ISP!

go to www.hellkom.co.za and shop around, you can get a lot more MB's for what your paying.
