Who's buying a Fermilicious?

I'm baffled how anybody could spend money on that overpriced box of fail... :confused:
 
The GTX 480 did reclaim the top spot, but nowhere near as what nvidia said they would. And the heat, and the power consumption, and the noise... So the answer is bragging rights
 
Any news on delivery of the Fermis?

I've decided against importing them ourselves for now. I just can't see that many people buying them at the moment :( . That and the fact that 90% of our clients are still going ATi and we've had nobody looking for a Fermi card instead and knowing what I do about the cards, I couldn't see myself recommending one, over an ATi equivalent, unless the client needed to use CUDA or some other proprietary nV tech.
 
:( I do know people who would be interested at that price point. I'd personally recommend a 470 over a 5850 if it was priced at 3400.
 
Agreed, the heating is an issue with the current GTX400 series, now, luckely the manufacturers are currentlt re-designing the PCB's and cooling systems, and are getting better temps.

But seriously, I will wait for version 2 or 3 or watever, when the standard cooling is no issue, and they work on the power usage as well

The heat and power issues arise from the architecture of the chips, doubt it will change. They need to crank the power to get the chips to work properly. Even the flagship GTX480 has a part of the chip disabled. Nvidias best bet is to get cracking and the next series (ie GTX 5xx) and revise the architecture there.

The thing that gets me, is that now with the liquid cooled review , and even the other review there are lower temps when using thease cards.
This only shows (to me at least) that Nvidia did not send enough time disigning the correct cooling solution on them.

Our stress test is Furmark, which is the worst thing that can happen to your graphics card. We left Furmark running for roughly half an hour, that way we heat up the coolant quite a bit. We ended at a peak temperature of 49 Degrees C and remember that was after half an hour 100% stress testing on the GPU.

This very same sample with the default reference cooler would get to 95 degrees C. Obviously I have to note that results can and will vary with different liquid-cooling setups.

Water can absorb about 100 times more thermal energy than air can. This is the reason for the low temps, not a poor cooler design. In fact, the cooler on the new cards is quite amazing, it has heatpipes and everything. Heck, they even cut a slot out of the PCB to help get more air in. Water cool a 5870 and you get it down to about 38 degrees (runs about 80 degrees on air) to put the 49 degrees of the 480 in perspective

True, I understand that, but if you are designing a product and have a temp issue, you should work on it until it is "fixed"
So if a fan/heatsink setup did not give them the desired outcome, they should maybe have looked at something else.


As for it, I agree, redesign the Fermi, or whatever they want to call the next one, that can compete, and beat the ATI's in all aspects........ (just a hope!!!!)

They did try to fix it. Went from 512 shaders down to 480. They upped the voltage to get the chip stable (even with one sector fused off). They lowered the clocks to compensate for the extra power/heat from the extra voltage. They had an ambitious design that didnt work too well, and then it got hit by manufacturing issues (they are technically already on the 3 revision) so it was late as well. 6 months is a long time in the PC industry, so they went for the damage control option.
