Who's buying a Fermilicious?

Well, I'm interested in this. Fermi seems to offer a awkward tradeoff when posed against a similarly-priced ATi Radeon card. The price and performance are decent, it's just the temps, noise and power-consumption that's fairly horrible.

But, there are some pros:

-More CUDA power for anyone that uses it
-Tessellation
-Reasonable price/performance

So, my question to you is: Who's going to buy a GTX470 or GTX480 once they're released (first batch)?
 
Nobody should do it. As the prices stand now (in SA), you can get a HD5970 for the same price as a GTX480, depending on the manufacturer you can even get the HD5970 for less. No contest, I'd buy ATI this round if I hadn't already upgraded.
 
CUDA compute capability is much better. Better floating point precision is really useful.

But the price is a problem. Not so sure that it's worth upgrading from the GTX295 I'm currently using.
 
If SA prices reflected launch prices - i.e. $350/500 then it would be a consideration yes. I don't think it's as much of a disaster as everyone is making it out to be.

you're kidding right? when has SA prices ever reflected US launch prices?

Ok, but think about this - at launch, the 5850/5870 were meant to go for $270 and $400 (IIRC). Then due to huge demand and small supply they went up to around $325 and $450. Given the difficulties with Fermi, I think it will be in the same boat. Good prices for first batch so that reviews give them decent price performance ratio, then as demand far outstrips supply prices go up and then value for money goes out the window. This is not even taking into consideration that ATI may drop its prices, pushing Fermi even further out in terms of value.

What really sucks though is that we dont seem to get the first batch pricing, most probably because we rarely see any first batch cards. Sigh...
 
Hear hear! So, pricing is definitely a huge consideration here. So, what kind of prices would make you bite?

GTX 480: R4800
GTX470: R3400

That would seem to be inline with USA prices, roughly. Would anyone have interest in that?
 
Yes I would be interested in those prices Ratwiz...if you can organise something like that you'll have a market here.

Look I know i'm talking hypothetically guys - don't slam me for it lol. It's the reality - Fermi is attractive at the right price. 480 IS definitely a fair bit faster than 5870. And for a single GPU i'm not that bothered about heat and noise.
 
I'd consider it at that price, but noise is still an issue for me. But those prices seem to neglect import tax, VAT etc. At that price the 480 is the same as a 5870, which is supposed to be $100 less. If you get it right you'd have a lot of orders though ;)
 
I hear some praise for the GTX 480 at that pricing, what about the GTX 470? How's the interest level on that?

My math is correct on the pricing. Unless something drastically changes, that is all do-able.
 
470 is going to be much more within my reach than 480, so yes that's where my interest would be specifically. Not saying I'm a definite buyer but if I could find a way I'd rather go 470 than 5850 at roughly the same price.
 
For either of those cards I'd say you'll get a considerable amount of interest at those prices. Kudos to you :)
 
ja nee , i would never pay 8 grand (SLI mode) or whatever for a piece of plastic that over heats .... srsly . the reason i say SLI , is when you get one , you want another one . thats just insane :P . you could do some serious renovating or something more usefull , like x2 5770's :D and get a nice microwave or new weed eater or paint your roof or go on a mini holiday to wherever.. dont waste your time with first generation fermi .think of the noise , the heat , the eskom bill or lack there of ! LOL ! you will kick yourself in the nose when second generation comes. AND THATS THE TRUTH.

considering it costs soo much money i'll wait for version 2, when all the bugs have been sorted out. nvidia doesnt seem to have a good start though :(
 
Nobody who has been on the internet for more than 6 months shoudl take anything charlie says seriously. Google his name and read anythig he has written and you'll see that according to him NVIDIA has been on the brink of destruction for at least 5 years.
The only real info in that link is info thats on all the other tech sites about a mid-range Fermi part which will arrive June 1st it seems. The rest is his typical rubbish anyway....

GTX4XX is really hot, loud and right now unavailable (e-tail and brick and motar store availabilty from Monday) however if you dont' mind the heat and the noise as such (just a little less noisy than a 5970) and have the money, there's no reason to not consider it. Prices will be high at first (and no ATI will not be dropping prices, contrary to popular belief no Radeon 5870 is selling for the MSRP of $399 which they set out at release in November 2009 I know there's a Visiontek 5870 on newegg for $394, but there's been no stock and that's with rebate ) and there will be no price war as such because yilds at TSMC for any big 40nm product are still low.
If you are just after a great high end DX11 card right now, I see no reason to not buy a Radeon 5870 s that is available even in this country
