So who started using Telegram? Its what whatapp should have been. I've converted as well as 9 million other users and the amount of users on my contact list is increasing daily.

Some things that make it better than whatsapp.

All conversations are encrypted
Compression - to save data!
Cloud sync between devices
Has mobile versions, desktop versions and browser extensions
Can send photos, videos, and "documents": all file types supported
Max file size is 1GB.
Groups for 200 members
Secret chats with End-to-end encryption
Auto-destructing messages in secret chats

My favourite things is I can use a desktop client too to chat to my contacts and use it on a tablet and phone at the same time

from their FAQ

Q: How is Telegram different from WhatsApp?

Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram is cloud-based and heavily encrypted. As a result, you can access your messages from several devices (including desktops!) and share an unlimited number of photos, videos and documents (doc, zip, mp3, etc). Thanks to our multi-data center infrastructure and encryption, Telegram is also faster and way more secure. On top of that, Telegram is free and will stay free — no ads, no subscription fees, forever.

I've begun using it as well. The desktop app functionality is pretty awesome.

I have :D Best decision ever. I've only got a little Samsung pocket, and Telegram runs far better on it than Watsapp. :D And messages seem to upload far easier than messages from Watsapp.

Poor Facebook. 19 Billion down the drain :p

Desktop functionality is what I've really been missing from whatsapp.
This may just convert me - hopefully others will too.

Never heard of it - thanks for the share :)

Just installed it, unfortunately only 2 of my contacts are using it. Time to educate some family and friends.

Self destruct messages!
That's the closest I'll get to Mission Impossible in my daily life.

Not as secure apparently....

Whatsapp competitor Telegram might not be that secure

This past weekend, when Whatsapp went down for a few hours, with server issues, many people decided to try out the alternatives. It doesn’t help that Whatsapp had also just been acquired by Facebook, raising privacy concerns among its 450-million users.
One of the apps people resorted to was a relative newcomer, Telegram. With a simple interface, and promises of speed and security, more than 5-million people downloaded the app while Whatsapp was suffering downtime. Since then, the app’s been the centre of attention among people who want a non-Facebook-related alternative to Whatsapp, as well as something more secure. After all, the big pitch Telegram gives, right on its website, is that it is private and secure.
Except it’s not as secure as it’s supposed to be.

Also, the self destruct messages should not be relied on.

Snapchat started with these self destruct messages yet many of the photos sent this way ended up on the net to the dismay of those who sent them. Easy to take a screenshot or photo before the message/photo deletes itself.

Why don't they claim the $200k prize offered to anyone who can break the encryption?

Not sure, but a good question. Have not read the article in detail as I do not make use of Telegram. Just remembered seeing it when I saw this thread so posted the link here.
